A Consideration of the Validity of Cultural Protectionism with Reference to the Multifunctionality of European Farms and the Canadian Magazine Dispute
Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1.3 (A), University of Manchester (Manchester School of Management), language: English, abstract: This paper adresses how the defence of local culture is becoming an increasing concern in the current era of globalisation, as diminishing transport costs and new forms of communication are enabling worldwide dissemination of products and ideas. The import of cultural goods from nations with disparate values and traditions is investigated, which could potentially cause the destabilisation of national or local communities. Indeed, these cultural goods may displace existing products and result in cultural homogenisation. Also, this paper looks at measures designed to protect culture which are exempt from WTO consideration and disputes between nations are negotiated bilaterally. As a result, fears that larger economies, such as the US, are able to dominate the cultural industries of smaller nations are investigated. Finally, this paper makes two main recommendations concerning domestic policy and concerning international trade policy. Through the development of a methodology which can develop agreements on more easily recognisable cultural interests - those less clouded by economic motivations - such a body would be able to tackle the more complex and problematic issues, with the aim of separating economic and political issues from genuine cultural concerns.
A Review of the Rand Health Insurance Experiment. Statistics and Econometrics
Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Economy - Health Economics, grade: 1,0, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: The famous RAND Health Insurance Experiment (RAND HIE) deals with the question how health insurance affects medical spending. The scientific essay The RAND Health Insurance Experiment, Three Decades Later (2013) by Aviva Aron-Dine, Liran Einav, and Amy Finkelstein, extracted from the Journal of Economic Perspective, forms the basis for this seminar paper. All facts regarding the primary experiment are taken from this essay. It features a reexamination of the core findings of the RAND HIE with a state of the art perspective regarding the analysis of randomized experiments and the economics of moral hazard. Between 1974 and 1981, more than 5,800 individuals from about 2,000 households in six different locations across the United States participated in the RAND HIE and thereby received health insurance. The experiment randomly assigned families to health insurance plans with different levels of cost sharing and was representative of families with adults under the age of 62. The plans ranged from full coverage ("free care") to plans with little coverage (5 percent) for the first approximately $4,000 (in 2011 dollars) incurred during a year. The conduct and analysis of randomized experiments as well as the economic analysis of moral hazard in the context of health insurance were relatively novel fields of research back in the years of the RAND investigation. Nevertheless, the RAND results are highly esteemed when predicting the likely impact of health insurance reforms on medical spending or design-ing actual insurance policies. In the course of time, health spending has grown and the consequent pressure on the public sector confers additional significance to the RAND estimates. The RAND HIE was funded by the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and cost roughly $295 million (in 2011 dollars). From a cost perspective alone, a replication of such an experiment is highly improbable. In section two, the design of the RAND HIE is presented and complemented by a depiction of the key economic object of interest, namely the impact of health insurance on medical spending. Section three describes the experimental analysis, including the baseline regression. The core variable of interest, the treatment effect, is specified and validated. In section four, the price elasticity is derived and the application discussed. Section five emphasizes the raison d'être for a randomized experiment based on statistical evidence and additional literature.
A Study on the Factors affecting the Stock Market Returns in Malaysia
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 2, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, language: English, abstract: This research paper investigates the dynamic relationship between Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) and four selected macroeconomic variables namely exchange rate, inflation rate, crude oil price and foreign direct investment. The research consists of 108 monthly observations from the period of January 2007 to December 2015.In this research, the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test (ADF) showed that at 5% significance level, all the variables are stationary at first difference. For the diagnostic tests, there is no multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation, and model specification problems. However, normality problem was detected in the model. Moreover, Granger causality test and OLS regression model were carried out to determine the short-run and long-run relationships between the KLCI and the selected macroeconomic variables respectively. Results suggest that in the short-run there is no relationship between the KLCI and the four selected macroeconomic variables. However, in the long-run exchange rate, inflation rate, and crude oil prices are found to significantly affect the performance of KLCI, whereas foreign direct investment is found not to influence the movements of KLCI. The exchange rate and inflation negatively affect the KLCI, and the crude oil price has a positive impact in the KLCI movements.
About MBA Tracer Study 2009 - 2012
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 95.00, , course: MBA program, language: English, abstract: This tracer study aims to determine the reasons Masters in Business Administration (MBA) graduates for Academic Year 2009 to 2012 to finish their MBA and after earning their degree the reasons to stay in their present job, accept job offers or change jobs. Using frequency the study reveals that passion for the profession, present career challenges and advancement of a career are the leading reasons to finish the MBA degree. Similarly, these are the same reasons for an MBA degree holder to stay, accept or change jobs after graduation. The result of the chi-square test of goodness of fit, (¿2, 4, N = 88) = 9.49, p<.05, shows the presence of significant differences, among MBA graduates, in their reasons to finish MBA, to stay in their present jobs, to accept job offers or to change jobs.

Alfred Marshall's equilibrium theory. A critical analysis of its relevance for modern economics
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Economics - Micro-economics, grade: 1,0, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, language: English, abstract: In the economy, the concept of equilibrium has consistently been an object of debate and caused numerous disputes. Therefore, it is crucial to constantly enhance and shed light on the interpretation within the historical age. Especially, if the discourse around the notion of equilibrium is in the context of the theoretical mathematical deliberations and the dominant perception of humanity in various historical periods. Significant examples are, for instance, the generating wealth during the classical era (1750-1820) by Adam Smith¿s "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" (1776) and maximizing utility through subjective assessment during the neoclassical era. The neoclassical concept of the omniscient human being and the classical concept of homo economicus, who is primarily self-interested but also socially useful, are based on contrasting assumptions about human behaviour. The principles for the construction of an equilibrium vary in the short- or long-term perspective and the impact of the quantity or price. Additionally, the establishment of an equilibrium concept can prioritize the interconnections among markets (general equilibrium) or the notion of progress in particular fields (partial equilibrium). It will be intriguing to analyze the impact or methodological resemblance of previous ideas in contemporary economics. The proposed research addresses the concepts of Alfred Marshall (1842-1924). Once Marshall's economic concepts have been thoroughly articulated, it is necessary to inquire about the extent to which these ideas are included in modern economics and their significance for the field. This research will examine this subject using the Sraffian critique as its foundation. The question of whether Marshall is a modern classic or a classic of modernity must be dealt with in any case (see Rieter 2008 in Starbatty 2008, pp. 135-158). Furthermore, it will explore how Marshall's ideas can contribute to the development of contemporary economic theories and their impact on present-day economics.

An Analysis of Economic Policies in Post-Apartheid South Africa
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2025 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät), course: Lehrstuhl für Wirtschaftspolitik, language: English, abstract: This thesis examines the evolution and effectiveness of South Africa's economic policies in the post-apartheid era, from 1994 to 2023. Following the end of apartheid and the democratic transition led by the African National Congress (ANC), the South African government implemented a series of ambitious economic strategies aimed at redressing historical injustices and promoting inclusive growth. The study critically analyzes major policy frameworks, including the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR), Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (ASGISA), the New Growth Path (NGP), and the National Development Plan 2030 (NDP).Drawing on economic theory, policy documents, and empirical data, the research identifies persistent structural challenges such as high unemployment, inequality, weak institutional capacity, and fiscal constraints. Despite periods of macroeconomic stability and moderate growth, many policies failed to achieve their intended goals due to poor implementation, policy inconsistency, and limited state capacity. The analysis highlights a recurring gap between policy ambition and practical delivery. The thesis concludes that South Africa requires a hybrid economic model that balances state intervention with private sector dynamism, supported by strong institutions, better governance, and long-term investment in education, infrastructure, and job creation. Without addressing these foundational issues, the vision of inclusive economic transformation remains unfulfilled.
An Analysis of El Salvador's Failed Bitcoin Experiment
Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 1,3, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: This paper explores Bitcoin's potential as an alternative to a central bank-backed currency by analysing El Salvador's recent adoption of it as a legal tender. Such monetary experiments are rare, providing researchers with a unique possibility to identify the macroeconomic effects of monetary regime changes. I find that a medium of exchange is not simply created by a government adopting a new legal tender but by the broad acceptance of it by the populace, which occurs due to substantial relative benefits of the new currency to the status quo. In particular, I am going to argue that El Salvador's Bitcoin experiment failed, because the people of El Salvador did not perceive the need for a new currency and because Bitcoin does not fulfil any of the traditional functions of a currency.
An analysis of the benefits and critique between the free trade agreements NAFTA and CETA in a historical comparison
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,9, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: The following paper refers to the potential of international free trade agreements to create interconnected economic markets, which require a common trade policy of the contracting countries. The difficulty in this approach is to ensure an economic integration of both countries on the basis of bilateral treaties, despite differing cultural, social and economic attitudes. As an effect of the continuing globalization and the increased international interconnectedness, there is generally a rising number of international free trade agreements among countries with the intention to achieve economic growth and welfare that on the other hand simultaneously led to an increased amount of criticism arising from non-governmental organizations, consumer protection organizations or environmental groups. This oppositeness has received a lot of attention during the recent negotiations and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada. Similar to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a foreseen free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States that has been temporarily suspended due to huge protests, both agreements have in common that they bear more criticism that than any other free trade agreement ever before. This is why it is interesting to know to which degree there is a correlation of similarities and differences between a modern free trade agreement such as the CETA and an already established treaty like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Mexico and Canada. According to the title, there will be "An analysis of the benefits and critique between the free trade agreements NAFTA and CETA in a historical comparison" with the purpose of figuring out whether a certain contracting country is benefiting from the NAFTA or the CETA or if it is experiencing any social, environmental, cultural, economic or other disadvantages. In the following segments these aspects will be examined, contrasted and evaluated with the support of studies and current data to provide meaningful findings and to give a final recommendation for action at the end of the paper.
An Analysis on the Financial Performance and Production Efficiency of Selected Sugar Mills in the State of Tamilnadu, India
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: None, , course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: AN ANALYSIS ON THE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY OF SELECTED SUGAR MILLS IN THE STATE OF TAMILNADU, INDIAAbstract:Under the structured Industrial Development Policy in India, sugar industry was part of the Five-Year Plans introduced in 1951 and has been under the direct control of the Governmentever since. Sugar industry is highly politicized and so closely controlled by the Government which has no parallel in the industry. Government control, covers all aspects of sugar business i.e., licensing/capacity/cane area/procurement/sugar pricing/distribution and imports and exports. Sugar scene in India has been that of protectionism. Overall government policy has given impressive results. Competition became intense and customers more demanding on quality and service. A moot question that arises in this context is that because of low productivity in agriculture and the increasing competition faced, to what extent the Indian sugar industry could be financially viable. This doubt is attempted to be clarified by examining a sample of sugar industries operating in the state of Tamil Nadu. With the industrial development, the present study attempts to examine the financial performance on the one hand and the productivity of the sample sugar industry of TamilNadu on the other. Hence, the scope of the study extends from the Financial Accounting to Industrial Economics.
An Assessment of Occupational Health & Environmental Safety on Job Performance in Echotex Ltd
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: B.Sc in Environmental Science, , language: English, abstract: Recent accidents happening in most companies in Bangladesh should be a source of worry to everyone. Most employers fail to put in place suitable health and safety measures in place at their workplace to defend not only the employees and management but also clients/customers and other stakeholders who might have some kind of interest in the company or institution. Ineffective occupational health and safety policy have a negative effect on the organization as well as the workforce. Some of these include, cost of wages paid for time lost, cost of damage to material or equipment, cost of overtime work required as a result of accidents etc. It is against this background that the researcher decided to research into the area. The topic for the work was an assessment of occupational health and safety practices on job performance at the EchoTex Ltd. Being a garment factory, the staff, management, guards and other stakeholders are expose to several risks and hazards. The research aimed among other things to examine the effect of occupational health and safety on job performance. The officers, administrators, technicians, cooks, guards etc. in the departments and units of the factory formed the population of the study. Eighty respondents formed the sample size of the study. Data was collected through questionnaire, interviews and review of relevant literature from books, articles, website etc. It was found out that the current occupational health and safety practices at the factory were inadequate. Staff commitment and compliance to health and safety rules was also low. It was recommended that management of the factory constitute a safety committee and maintain regular monitoring, inspection and evaluation and conduct reviews for improvement.
An Empirical Investigation of the Nature of Corruption in Zimbabwe
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: B, ( Atlantic International University ), course: PhD Economics, language: English, abstract: Corruption has become one of the most notoriously persistent and progressively worsening social problems afflicting Zimbabwe today, and this is indisputable. Corruption is most unwanted in the society especially by those not involved, but it is blamed by those who practice it, just to divert attention. Important to note is that corruption is as old as the government, total elimination is impossible, but it should be barred to reach serious levels. This study seeks to empirically investigate the nature of corruption in Zimbabwe. The study uses a questionnaire approach to explore various dimensions of existing corruption and its impact on the society. A total of 835 participants countrywide correctly completed the questionnaire and electronically submitted. Included in this total are questionnaires that were hand distributed. The study utilises the weighted average approach to design various indices for policy derivation. On a scale of 1-10, the corruption index intensity was found to be 6.8 indicating serious levels of corruption in the economy. Nepotism/Favouritism/Cronysim and bribery/kickbacks/gifts have been found to be the major corruption forms in the society. Corruption networks have been confirmed to exist in society and commonly emanates from school and work; this is in line with the Social Learning theory. The study also found out that the Anti-Corruption body is ineffective to address corruption issues, and it is not autonomous from politics, and therefore concentrate on petty corruption rather than grand corruption. Determinants of corruption include poor remuneration, income inequality, job insecurity, greediness and economic instability. The best ways to harness corruption is to improve the political will, individual solutions and law enforcement.
