The British engagement in Mesopotamia ( today's Iraq) in the Great War was almost as disastrous, and certainly as difficult, as its recent 21st century conflict in the same area. Although the Turkish enemy collapsed at the end of the war, the initial British commitment led to one of the greatest colonial defeats of the era, the surrender of General Townshend's garrison at Kut-al-Amara in 1915, and the subsequent suffering and deaths of many Indian and British troops in brutal Turkish captivity. Esther Bejarano (15.12.1924 - 10.7.2021) verlor durch die Nationalsozialisten ihre Familie und war als Jüdin in den Konzentrationslagern Auschwitz-Birkenau und Ravensbrück interniert. Im 'Mädchenorchester von Auschwitz' spielte sie Akkordeon. Einige Jahre nach ihrer Befreiung durch die Alliierten, nach Emigration und Rückkehr aus Israel begann sie sich in Hamburg in der Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes VVN zu engagieren. Sie wurde zu einer von Deutschlands bekanntesten Kämpferinnen für den Frieden und gegen das Vergessen. Bis zu ihrem Tod war sie aktiv im Auschwitz- Komitee. Jahrzehntelang motivierte die ausgebildete Sängerin Tausende von Menschen auf Demonstrationen und eigene Konzerte, u.a. mit der Rapgruppe 'Microphone Mafia'. Ihr legendäres Charisma, ihre Lebensfreude und ein ungebrochener Optimisus machten sie zu einer Brückenbauerin zwischen den Generationen und Kulturen. The odd title derives from the nickname given to this and other units of the 3rd Australian division which wore the same "fried-egg' cloth arm flash.
