"Emerging contaminants".

A Bitter Legacy: Coal Mining, Acid Mine Drainage, and the Fight for Clean Water
"A Bitter Legacy" delves into the toxic consequences of coal mining - acid mine drainage (AMD). It explores the historical legacy of coal mining and how it has left a bitter mark on the environment, especially water resources. The book sheds light on the process of AMD formation, where abandoned mines pollute waterways with sulfuric acid and harmful metals. This book isn't just about the problem; it's about the fight for clean water. It tells the stories of communities impacted by AMD and their ongoing struggle for solutions. "A Bitter Legacy" explores efforts to remediate contaminated water sources, hold mining companies accountable, and advocate for sustainable practices in the industry. It's a call to action for a cleaner future and a reminder of the importance of protecting our water resources.
A Brighter Future for Polluted Waters? Bioremediation and the Fight Against Acid Mine Drainage
A chemostat study of BSR was carried out using anaerobic digestate as a carbon source and electron donor. These data and their kinetic analysis are presented in Chapter 5. Here the effect of the volumetric sulphate loading rate (VSLR), which was mediated through dilution rate and feed sulphate concentration on volumetric sulphate reduction rate (VSRR), is reported and discussed. Mathematical models previously used for acetate, ethanol and lactate were fitted to describe the effect of feed sulphate concentration on the BSR kinetics when anaerobic digestate was used as a carbon source and electron donor.
A Comparison of the Atmospheric Pollution Between The Emirate of Dubai and Sharjah
Presentation / Essay (Pre-University) from the year 2019 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: A* (36/40), , course: Environmental Science, language: English, abstract: This research essay will aim to differentiate the levels of atmospheric pollution between the two cities of Sharjah and Dubai through the usage of extensive primary data collection and established secondary data. There are six key factors: a general consensus, weather conditions and visibility, air pollution indices, traffic counts, city-specific lists and governmental data. Air Pollution within the UAE is a prevalent issue and has been for decades on end. The situation only seems to be getting worse, due to the collateral effects of urbanization. Dubai expects to host 25 million new visitors, thus the city looks to expand its urban sprawl, taking into account new construction projects, a greater population influx and higher numbers of vehicular usage (motorisation). Worldpopulationreview.com reported that Dubai's population has been increasing at a rate of 10.3% as of late 2016, making it one of the world's fastest-growing cities. Sharjah on the other hand, a city 30km away from Dubai, also seems to be expanding, through growing industrial activity and a greater number of labour and working-class residents settling in the Emirate within a relatively small surface area. A high frequency of factories litter Sharjah's industrial areas, and densely packed traffic of heavy vehicles going to and coming from Dubai feed into the fumes released into the atmosphere. Moreover, both cities lie close to Dubai International Airport, one of the world's busiest and most crowded airports. Lastly, Dubai possesses a greater density of vegetation per sq km due to scattered golf courses, green neighbourhoods and public parks. As for Sharjah, it is clear that a majority of the land area is occupied by residential buildings, factories and offices; with fewer parks and vegetational cover. It is evident that a myriad of factors come into play when determining the levels of air pollution between the two cities and it is crucial to compare the various effects and impacts of air pollution on the people of each city.
A Continent in Peril: Climate Change and the Future of Africa
"A Continent in Peril: Climate Change and the Future of Africa" sounds the alarm on the existential threat posed by climate change to the African continent. The book likely paints a stark picture of Africa's vulnerability - rising temperatures, water scarcity, and extreme weather events - all fueled by a changing climate. It goes beyond simply describing the dangers, delving into the potential consequences: food insecurity, mass displacement, and economic hardship. "A Continent in Peril" doesn't shy away from the human cost. However, the book isn't all doom and gloom. It might explore potential solutions - adaptation strategies, renewable energy initiatives, and international cooperation. Ultimately, the book serves as a call to action, urging readers to engage in efforts to secure a sustainable future for Africa.
A Hypothetical Enhanced Renewable Energy Utilization (EREU) Model for Electricity Generation in Thailand
Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: Passed, Assumption University of Thailand (College of Internet Distance Education (CIDE), School of Business Administration), course: Master Thesis Project, language: English, abstract: This thesis presents a research project entitled 'A Hypothetical Enhanced Renewable Energy Utilization (EREU) Model for Electricity Generation in Thailand'. This research is motivated by Thailand's rapidly increasing electricity consumption caused by the country's long-standing above-average economic growth. Consequently, the rising electricity demand can only be satisfied by continuously growing electricity imports and thus creating a significant burden to Thailand's national budget. Further-more, Thailand is heavily dependent on natural gas reserves for electricity generation, however, these are expected to be depleted within only three decades and global price levels for conventional fuels are increasingly volatile with an ascending tendency as well. Therefore, Thailand faces an urgent need to strategically plan for the broad utili-zation of domestic renewable energy resources, which is essential for a more diversi-fied and thus sustainable electricity generation, as well as for the nation's endeavor to become an energy hub within the South East Asian region. Under these circumstances this research conducts a comprehensive literature re-view regarding the past development as well as the current situation of renewable energy utilization in Thailand, which concludes in the identification of the importance of renewable energy in the given context and closes with both a distinctive need as-sessment and a conceptual framework for Thailand's future renewable energy strat-egy. Subsequently, the research introduces a unique primary research endeavor in the form of an explorative expert interview survey, which succeeds in a substantial col-lection of qualitative and in-depth data. These valuable data is first objectively ana-lyzed and second subjectively interpreted and summarized to become the major source for the derivation of a multitude of potential strategic recommendations for an enhanced future renewable energy utilization development in Thailand. Finally, the entirety of theses recommended strategic approaches, based on both the secondary and primary research, are assembled to develop the Enhanced Renewable Energy Uti-lization (EREU) model for electricity generation in Thailand as the fundamental find-ing of this thesis and research project respectively.
A Material Revolution: The Story of Plastic and Its Impact
"A Material Revolution: The Story of Plastic and Its Impact" presents a balanced perspective. It acknowledges the transformative power of plastic while hinting at the potential downsides of its widespread use.The title suggests a narrative approach, inviting exploration of plastic's journey. We could delve into its invention and rapid rise in popularity, highlighting its benefits like affordability, durability, and versatility. This period could be referred to as the "revolution."The analysis would then shift to explore the impact of plastic. This might include the environmental consequences of plastic waste accumulation and potential health concerns. Here, a more nuanced tone could be used, acknowledging the ongoing debate and research in this area.Ultimately, the title "A Material Revolution" emphasizes the profound influence plastic has had on our world. It paves the way for a deeper discussion - how can we harness the benefits of plastic while mitigating its negative consequences to ensure a more sustainable future?
A novel database management logic designed for some important production stages of farm to table
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 5, National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, language: English, abstract: The primary goal of the present dissertation is to introduce a self-developed data storage logic called Joker Tao (JT), which provides the opportunity to store and manage each input data in one (physical) data table while the data storage concept is structured. JT allows any data whether entity, attribute, data connection or formula, to be stored and managed under just one physical data table. In the JT logic based databases, the entity and the attribute are used interchangeably, so users can expand the database with new attributes either during or after the development process. With JT logic, data storage using one physical data table is ensured in SQL database system for the storage and management of long-term scientific information. I examined the effects and importance of JT during some production stages of farm to table. Namely, the interoperability between soil and GHG production data from different data storage structures, data relating to food-stock records, billing and payroll in the baking industry are examined in this dissertation. With regard to development, the results show that in case of 1000 records or more (positive results) significantly faster queries could be realized with JT model usage in cloud compared to relational databases (in Oracle APEX environment). The results show that from 10000 records the relational model generates slow (more than 1 second) queries in a cloud-based environment while JT can remain within a one second time frame.Farm-to-table refers to the stages of food production and is associated with sustainable agriculture. Studies on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions linked to soil cultivation require large amounts of data. These data are mainly inducted from laboratory measuring devices or from various systems including geographical information and other specific systems, which operate with data from different data storage structures. Operating with data from different data storage structures is a challenge for companies and research institutes. Modern database management systems fall into two broad classes: RDBMS and NoSQL. The interoperability between SQL and NoSQL often garners considerable attention in the world of databases, with many solutions to have been proposed to solve this issue. There are some initiations in the literature about converting systems. I focused on creating a data storage logic, which increases the performance of NoSQL data storage concept-based RDBMS database management system.

Abbaubare Kunststoffe
Doch was bedeutet das wirklich?
Abfallwirtschaft: Duales System Deutschland.
About the need of building green
Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: MSC, Edinburgh Napier University (Engineering), course: Real estate Management, language: English, abstract: Our way of life is killing us. Our buildings consume over 40% of our energy and resources and their use represents 70% of our total consumption (Rabin 2005). It's further stressed that the environmental damage caused in the last hundred years is a direct result from how our buildings are built. Architects, designers, and all building professionals are in a position to affect great change on our environment, more so, than any other group, since our buildings are responsible for most of the damage. "Green building"(also known as "sustainable," "ecological," and "eco-designed") is a way of looking at buildings in terms of reducing energy use, conserving water, improving indoor air quality, and reducing dependence on our natural resources. Although the basic concepts for green building have been around for decades, it has only been in the last few years that we have seen this explosive growth in the greening of the construction industry'' (Rabin 2005).Since buildings account for one-sixth of the world's fresh water withdrawals, one-quarter of its wood harvest, and two-fifths of its material and energy flows, (Roodman,& Lenssen,1995).Therefore it's the duty of a reasonable property industry to balance environmental, social and economic issues to ensure a viable and valuable industry for future generations.

Agent-Based-Modelling. Pond eutrophication in agroecosystems and the influence of combinations of pesticides and fertilizers on aquatic productivity
Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 1,3, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, language: English, abstract: The paper asks, if ponds located in agroecosystems can be prevented from tipping over by variation in combinations of fertilizers and pesticides. Through a simulation in NetLogo, an agent-based programmable modeling environment, the interplay of two pesticides (Cypermethrin and Malathion) and a fertilizer (Nitrogen + Phosphate) and their effect on the aquatic productivity is observed. The model depicts an agroecosystem with three separate fields and two ponds. The model is simplified by assuming consistent environmental conditions and narrowing down the pond population to one zooplankton species and one phytoplankton species (Chlorella vulgaris). Through variation of variables different scenarios are generated. The research revealed that input of pesticides - even without fertilizers which are known for supporting phytoplankton growth - results in eutrophication through decreasing zooplankton population and therefore blooming phytoplankton population. The original contribution of the simulation is in revealing that beyond the amount of chemical substances used in farming, the variation of input is also to consider, since certain ones may have greater negative effects than assumed so far.
