Der nautischeOffizier wird als Planer und Gestalter des Bordlebens und des Arbeitssystems "Schiff"verstanden, dazu werden seine Werkzeuge betrachtet hinsichtlich der Auswirkungen aufLeistung und Gesundheit seiner Untergebenen.Alle Maßnahmen seitens der Gesetzgebung zielen letztlich auf die Gewährleistung derSchiffsicherheit. Diese Maxime findet sich auch in der Umsetzung der "Guten Seemannschaft"wieder. Neben der "Guten Seemannschaft" existieren eine Vielzahl von Strategienund Abläufen, die unterschiedliche Auswirkungen auf den Bordbetrieb haben, als Beispielwird das International Safety Management aufgeführt.Auf welche Weise die nautischen Führungskräfte letztlich selektiert und positioniert werden,wird in Frage gestellt. Es lassen sich Selektionspunkte vor, während und nach derAusbildung ausfindig machen. Eine bedeutsame Rolle spielen hierbei die Crewing Abteilungender Reedereien. Dreißig deutsche Reedereien werden mit einem Befragungsbogenzum Thema "Sozialkompetenz und Schiffsicherheit" befragt.In der Befragung zu sozialen Kompetenzen und Schiffsicherheit ist die vorherrschendeMeinung eindeutig. "Soft skills" haben einen hohen Stellenwert in der Ausübung des Berufeseines Schiffoffiziers. Dennoch werden diese in Bewerbungsgesprächen bei den Reedereiennicht standardisiert evaluiert.
