A Century'S Progress In Astronomy
A spark from Victorian skies, revived for today's curious reader. A Century's Progress In Astronomy traces a century of discovery with clear-eyed wonder, weaving scientific essays into a human story of vision, measurement, and ingenuity. This compact volume blends popular science history with disciplined observation, guiding general readers and student astronomy enthusiasts through evolving instrumentation, shifting theories, and the steady rise of astronomy as a cultural conscience. MacPherson writes with precision and warmth, turning complex ideas into accessible, memorable ideas about how our view of the heavens has grown-from the first delicate instruments to the bold ambitions of modern measurement and survey.Historically significant and beautifully enduring, the work stands as a landmark in Victorian-era scientific writing, a British treatise that helped popularise science without oversimplification. It is a bridge between classic literature and contemporary curiosity, appealing to both casual readers and classical-literature collectors who value context, rigor, and lyric clarity.Out of print for decades, this title is being revived by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations, it is more than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure that invites fresh wonder about the history and progress of astronomy.

An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei
How can we test if a supermassive black hole lies at the heart of every active galactic nucleus? What are LINERS, BL Lacs, N galaxies, broad-line radio galaxies and radio-quiet quasars and how do they compare? This timely textbook answers these questions in a clear, comprehensive and self-contained introduction to active galactic nuclei - for graduate students in astronomy and physics. The study of AGN is one of the most dynamic areas of contemporary astronomy, involving one fifth of all research astronomers. This textbook provides a systematic review of the observed properties of AGN across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, examines the underlying physics, and shows how the brightest AGN, quasars, can be used to probe the farthest reaches of the Universe. This book serves as both an entry point to the research literature and as a valuable reference for researchers in the field.
An Introduction to Celestial Mechanics

Containing detailed explanations, helpful charts and diagrams, and a plethora of useful formulas, this text constitutes a must-have for those with an interest in the subject, and makes for a great addition to collections of allied literature. The chapters of this book include: Elements and Laws, Problems Treated, Enumeration of the Principle Elements, Enumeration of the Principles and Laws, Nature and the Laws of Motion, Remarks on the First Law of Motion, Remarks on the Second Law of Motion, et cetera. This book is being republished now complete with a new introduction on the history of astronomy.
Analytical solution for the Hubble parameter
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Astronomy, grade: 2,00, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, language: English, abstract: Embark on a groundbreaking exploration of the cosmos, where the accelerating expansion of the universe takes center stage. This compelling investigation delves into the enigmatic nature of the Hubble parameter, dissecting its intricate relationship with the celebrated Hubble constant and challenging conventional understanding of their interplay. Unravel the mysteries of cosmic expansion as we journey from our local cosmic neighborhood to the distant cosmic horizon, venturing back in time to half the universe's age. Discover how the expansion velocity and expansion acceleration influence the very fabric of spacetime, shaping our comprehension of the universe's evolution. Through meticulous analysis and innovative algorithms, this study not only elucidates the present state of cosmic expansion but also dares to predict the future behavior of the Hubble parameter, offering profound insights into the destiny of our universe. Grasp the implications of varying Hubble constant values on the Hubble parameter's trajectory and explore the pivotal role of dark energy in driving the universe's accelerating expansion. Confront the ongoing debate surrounding the precise measurement of the Hubble constant and its profound impact on cosmological models. From the familiar raisin bread model to the complexities of Einstein's general relativity and critical density, this exploration navigates the core concepts underpinning our understanding of the cosmos. This captivating synthesis of cosmology, astrophysics, and theoretical physics is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the universe's expansion and the dynamic interplay of the Hubble parameter, expansion velocity, expansion acceleration, the cosmic horizon, and the elusive dark energy. Delve into the time-dependent behavior of the Hubble parameter and its implications for cosmological observations, offering a fresh perspective on our place in the ever-expanding universe. This voyage promises to redefine our perception of the cosmos and spark new avenues of inquiry into the universe's deepest secrets, revealing how the Hubble parameter acts as a key to unlocking the universe's past, present, and future. Another look at the Missing Mass Problem
Essay aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Astronomie, Note: N/A, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper questions the widely accepted concept of "dark matter", used to explain discrepancies between the current theory of gravity, as it relates to the visible mass of the universe (ie. stars, dust and gas), and the observations of the movements of stars in the spiral arms of galaxies and in clusters of galaxies. The idea of dark matter, developed in 1932 by Jan Oort and in 1933 by Fritz Zwicky, was used to explain why the observed movements of stars were are not following Kepler's third law, being the relationship between the distance of an orbiting object and it's orbital period. In this paper, I am suggesting that the gross effects of these observations are in reality the combined effects of both gravity and magnetic fields, and also the reasoning to support this hypothesis. In this paper, as well, I have tried to explain my hypothesis through language which is not overtly technical, so that an intelligent layperson would be able to understand it. It is hoped that the practical and theoretical significance of my paper will result in a re-examination of the basic, underlying foundations supporting the idea of dark matter, and that this re-examination will result in a theory which does not need to rely upon an invisible, untouchable, and all encompassing gravational source as being one of the basic planks of the theory of the universe.
