"2001: A Space Odyssey" - Das Motiv der Reise in Stanley Kubricks Science-fiction-Film
"A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" from the Perspective of Literary Anthropology
"A Raisin in the Sun". Is working hard enough to achieve one's American Dream?
Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Duisburg-Essen, course: A Survey of American Literature, language: English, abstract: This term paper deals with the play "A Raisin in the Sun" and how the concept of the American Dream appears in the play. It will be discussed if working hard is enough to reach one's American Dream. The play is written by Lorraine Hansberry and published in 1958. It takes place in the south of Chicago where the Younger family lives and consists of five people from three different generations. Head of the family is Lena, who is mostly called Mama, right after her we got her son Walter Lee, who will be presented in the main part of this term paper. Besides, there is Walter's wife Ruth and their son Travis. The last member of the Youngers is Walter's sister Beneatha. Mama embodies the first generation and is quite traditional. Ruth, Walter and "Bennie" represent the second generation, whereas Travis is the only child in the third generation. The family has been living in America in the fifth generation and has got African roots. It can be said though that Walter, Bennie, Ruth and Travis are less traditional than Mama and identify with the American way of life. The whole family shares a small apartment in a ghetto and living together is difficult as everybody has got his or her own desire, Dream and point of view about certain topics. Especially Walter Lee expects a lot from life and the reader sympathizes with him. Misunderstood by his family Walter wants to live a better life and represents the concept of the American Dream of a person wanting to "rise from rags to riches". Walter dreams of an office job and really dislikes being a chauffeur for a white person. He wants his son to go to the best schools and to get the best education as possible. Furthermore, he also wants to spoil his wife and get himself a nice car. But why does he fail? Why does nobody in his family support his idea of raising an own business, namely opening a liquor store? Beneatha is not even surprised about Walter's failure. These questions shall be answered in the main part of this paper. Moreover, I quickly want to present the concept of the American Dream, especially focusing on the Dream of "Upward Mobility".
"Achieved Unity of Meanings" vs. "A Galaxy of Signifiers"
Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: Good, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Anglistics), course: Contemporary Literature Theory and Criticism, language: English, abstract: "Criticism, is the overall term for studies concerned with defining, clasifying, analysing, interpreting, and evaluating works of literature."1 What I'm going to analyze in this work is not criticism, but "theoretical criticism". Theoretical criticism proposes a theory of literature, in the sense of general principles, together with a set of terms, distinctions and categories , to be applied to identifying and analyzing works of literature, as well as the "criteria"2 by which these works and their writers are to be evaluated. Since the 1970s there has been a flood of writings, Continental, American and English, proposing diverse nove l and radical forms of critical theory. Why do we need criticism? In order to understand texts or to give them the "right interpretation"3. But can one speak about a right interpretation? In order to find a plausible answer to this question, I will focus on two of the most important modern literary theories, namely New Criticism, defined as "an achieved unity of meanings"4 and Deconstruction as "a galaxy of signifiers"5, comparing the two ones by means of the consulted essays on New Criticism and Deconstruction. But before comparing the two theories, I will first introduce you into the meaning and features of both theories, presenting you some of the most important critics and their essays and critical theories referring to New Criticism and Deconstruction. I will dedicate the last two units of my paper to an ample comparison between New Criticism and Deconstruction, showing you, that there are both similarities and differences to find in the two theories, and that in spite of all the differences, the former survives in the last one. Moreover, I will point some personal conclusions concerning my own point of view to the topics mentioned above.
"Address to Congress" by Woodrow Wilson. Context around 1917
Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject American Studies - Literature, University of Würzburg (Philosophisches Institut - Amerikanische Literaturwissenschaft), course: Hauptseminar, language: English, abstract: When Wilson turned to the Congress on the second of April in 1917, he aimed to announce that political agreements and the relation to Germany were under dire threats. Only four days later, on the sixth of April 1917, the United States passed a war resolution that declared the entry into the Great War. The war had already been ongoing since 1914, when America eventually joined in 1917, however, there was no end in sight. The entry of America caused a massive change in the course of the war, but, apart from this, the participation in the war marked a significant step towards the pursuit of world power in American history. Wilson requested a declaration of war against Germany in his speech Address to Congress because only the congress was granted to declare war as the constitution from 1789 had determined. He was aware of the fact that the Government, the Congress as well as the whole nation was not in favour of a war those days. Therefore, he used genius methods and technical brilliance to convince the Congress to engage in the war. On the basis of his persuasive speech he achieved to change America's attitude towards the war. Aristotle once formed an outline on how to master persuasion that is called symboleutikon and aims to give speakers a sort of framework for their speeches on the one hand. On the other hand, it defines concrete principles of how persuasiveness can be attained through speech. It consists of three major persuasive appeals called ethos, pathos and logos whose deployment is inevitable in persuasive communication. According to Aristotle's outline, ethos is used to give insight in the speaker's credibility and reliability. Pathos refers to an appeal to emotion, to evoke emotion and to move the audience. His last term logos describes the use of reason, logic and the use of evidence.
"American History X". Overcoming Racism in Prison
Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Rostock (Institut für Anglistik/ Amerikanistik), course: Prisoners and Prisons in the U.S., language: English, abstract: The theme of racism outside and inside a prison and how to personally overcome this racism as a victim as well as a perpetrator are major themes of the anti-racist movie"American History X". The life of incarcerated people and how it influenced them is often portrayed in TV series or films which are mostly made to entertain the populace rather than to educate or raise awareness about the problems that arise within the displayed topics, and for that stereotypes and juxtapositions are used as well as certain methodsand means of film making. This paper looks at exemplary scenes of "American History X" with emphasis on how some means of film making are used to display the life-changingexperiences that main protagonist Derek Vinyard encounters while being incarcerated.Today more than two million people of the United States of America are incarcerated in prisons; serving a sentence for a crime they have committed. The experience each inmate makes individually can have an immense impact on their behaviour and mind-set in and outside prison walls. Prisons in general function as public institutions which should, at the very best, try to help the inmates to "find a lawful, economically stable place" in a community and in society after their time spent in prison (Fleisher and Decker 1-2). Incarcerated people not only have to deal with the limitations of their freedom and privacy, often they also encounter racism and racial segregation by officers and other inmates. According to Philip Goodman, "it is the interaction between the inmate and officer in which categorization is born, and that makes racial categorization and segregation possible" (762).
"And the air vibrates with the silver sound". Anna Barbauld's Poetry
This book provides a contribution to the critical revaluation of Anna Barbauld's poetry. In particular, its purpose is to analyse the language of Barbauld's poems, namely, their style, their lexical choices and their rhetorical structure. Whereas the first stage of the book is a consideration of Barbauld's rhetoric as applied to her political poetry, the second and longer phase is a stylistic study of the poetry of domestic, scientific, religious and aesthetic subject. Finally, this study demonstrates that Barbauld's verse offers conciliation between the sphere of concrete domesticity, intended both as familial sociability and, latu sensu, the obedience to the values of political and social cohabitation, and the private realm of dreaminess, where the poet retires to meditate, to escape from mundane ordinariness, and to find expression for the diversions of her fancy.

"Bond, James Bond". A Cultural and Political Approach at the Depiction of a Global Hero
Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: James Bond. There is hardly a person in the Western world who has never heard of the almost mythical secret agent; who has never seen at least one movie or heard the famous quotation "Bond. James Bond". The secret agent, originally invented by the British author Ian Fleming has almost become something like a brand: there is just one Bond out there. Or, in this case seven. Ever since Ian Fleming published the first novel starring who would become the world's most famous spy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, there have been many different interpretations of the character that actually is James Bond. The factors that played a major role in this matter were dependant on a number of different aspects. Even though it is undisputable that, in the case of the movies, one of the factors is always the actor, there are a number of different aspects to be taken into consideration: cultural and historical ones.
"But I do think it is their husbands' faults If wives do fall." A gender studies approach to William Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice"
Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Würzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: Shakespeare's Tragedies, language: English, abstract: This seminar paper is trying to display some designated motifs of gender studies and wants to give an overview of how such an approach to Shakespeare's "Othello" can be made. Approaching Shakespeare's works under the aspect of gender studies might not been originally intended by the author, however it provides multiple chances of interpretations and varieties of looking at the text. This is why in this seminar paper the literary theory of gender studies will be implemented on Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice". Firstly a theoretical approach to Gender Studies is going to lead the way into this paper with an explanation of the main aspects of the Gender Studies theory and why it was chosen for this work. This will be followed by a focus on depictions of women and men and the gender related differences shown in the play. Furthermore a close look on the main characters namely Othello and Iago being the most important male characters and on the other hand Emilia and Desdemona as the main female characters in the play is taken. Main issues discussed are how the characters fit their role in society, female obedience and silence in contrast to male dominance and the need to act as. Also will these main themes be put in contrast with the plot and its development to see the impact of the characters and their gender related behaviour towards it. This will lead to a final analysis of how gender does influence the plot of the tragedy "Othello" and its outcome. The characters' downfalls that in the end lead to the tragic resolution is being discussed from a view of gender studies theory. The analysis shows how gender influences Shakespeare's drama in detail, which changes the characters go through with the progression of the plot and gives a short explanation of how these issues could be so fatal for the characters that die in the play.
"Byromania". Byron's Struggle With Celebrity
"Cashville" - Dilution of Original Country Music Identity through Increasing Commercialization
Where I come from, it's cornbread and chicken... This line from Alan Jackson's country hit defines the genre as the music of the American South. All its ambiguity set aside, the South stands proudly for its hospitality, politeness, sense of place and community. Family and religion are traditionally more important down there than in the rest of the country. As Southern culture becomes more and more americanized and the music of the small town Southern man (another Jackson song) is adapted for a mainstream audience, the original rustic identity that defines the true American genre loses its charm. Modern country music has become slick and professionalized and sounds more and more like common pop music to make it more profitable. This study focuses on the authentic country music identity and how it is threatened by increasing commercialization. It defines said identity and the working class culture from which it springs. It traces the history of country music and its different genres from the 19th and early 20th century cowboy music over Western Swing and Honky-Tonk of the 1930s and 1940s, the progressive movements of the 1960s and 1970s up to today's mainstream Country Pop, and shows how its target audience has changed over time and how the opposition tries to preserve traditional sounds. Authentic Texas Country is set in contrast to the commercial Nashville recording industry and both are compared in their respective developments over the years. In the face of terrorism, which poses a threat to the American National identity, country music with its representative American values has become increasingly popular and enforces a strong collective identity on a national level. However, in doing so, it also dilutes the original identity that was once restricted to life in a small town community rather than the country as a whole. What sets country music as a genre apart is its narrative structure. Every song has a story to tell: Be it about 'The Cold Hard Facts of Life', a prayer finally answered, or the first kiss on a Saturday night.

"Chicano English" and "Türkendeutsch": A comparison of two ethnic dialects
Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Würzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: American English: History, Variation, and Change, language: English, abstract: "In every living language, processes of change are as inevitable as rain." New dialects develop out of isolation as well as out of contact with other varieties. Thereby they are influenced by ongoing socio-cultural changes and, in turn, affect culture and way of speaking. This paper will summarize results of latest linguistic research on two ethnic dialects - Chicano English, a Hispanic variety of American English and Türkendeutsch , a relatively new variety of German. First, both varieties will be presented with regard to their history, their structural features and sociolinguistic aspects, starting with Chicano English. After outlining characteristics of both individually, major similarities and differences will be highlighted. Finally, difficulties in the context of this paper will be discussed and future prospects will be given.

"Come in and find out" - Zum Verständnis von Werbeanglizismen im Deutschen
"Communicative Competence" As Target
"Conscience does make cowards of us all." Hamlet the sceptic thinker - an anti-hero?
Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: As the protagonist of Shakespeare's play Hamlet, the young Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is popularly considered a heroic figure, revenging the murder of his father who was poisoned by Claudius, Hamlet's uncle. He appears to be an archetypical Renaissance figure, a versatile character that contains something of everything within him: "He is the sophisticated thinker and the powerless politician; the resentful child and the sober student; the moral Puritan and the deranged Prince; the witty murderer and the cold-blooded jester."Since Michael Davies speaks of Hamlet's supposed renaissance variety "as a compendium of selves" and therefore of a rather "modern man of no fixed identity", we will in the context of this work examine the question whether Hamlet could be considered an anti-hero by pointing out certain traits of his introverted nature and the significant impact of self-reflection on Hamlet's behaviour throughout the play.
"Crossing Frontiers". Grenzerfahrung in Jack Kerouacs "On the Road"
