In Africa and Asia, the majority of the population lives in rural areas and relies onplant materials to treat their illnesses. The plants are used in different forms such asextracts or decoctions to treat cancer, tuberculosis, HIV, malaria and many other diseases.Accordingly, these drugs, which are referred to as 'traditional herbal medicines'play an important role in improving the health status of the population and preventingendemic and acute diseases.[1] Also in developed countries traditional herbal medicinehas attracted great interest,[2] enforced by the green movements and an increasingaversion to synthetic materials. Scientifically, plant metabolites have provided importantideas for discovery and industrial development of therapeutics.[3]

"Green" Microemulsions and Nanoemulsions as Alternative Fuels
Combustion of water-containing diesel fuels results in a simultaneous reduction of soot and NOx-emissions, i.e. they partially avoid the so-called soot-NOx trade-off. In the frame of the present work new temperature invariant, highly efficient fuel microemulsions of the type water/antifreeze - diesel fuel - oleic acid/monoethanolamine/oleic acid diethanolamide containing up to 24 wt.% water with appropriate physical characteristics for commercial applications were formulated. As unexpected reward of the investigations on formulation of microemulsion fuels, novel water-in-fuel nanoemulsions (< 200 nm) were obtained featuring substantial reduction of surfactant content, an interesting economical aspect. Exhaust gas emissions, soot-structure and size distribution of water containing fuels compared to pure diesel fuel were analysed. The results show that using load-dependent water containing fuels yield a drastic reduction of soot up to 98 % (FSN) as well as nitrogen oxide emissions up to 62 %.

"In vitro" Selection of rPrPc-binding RNA Molecules
Internship Report from the year 2014 in the subject Chemistry - Bio-chemistry, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Chemie und Biochemie), course: Methodenmodul Nukleinsäuren, language: English, abstract: Aptamers can be considered as nucleic acid based analogues of monoclonar antibodies. These DNA or RNA molecules are characterized by a high affinity and selectivity to the target as well as a huge variety of possible targets, but feature significant advantages compared to antibodies such as the lack of immunogenicity and economic in vitro generation. The preparation of aptamers is based on systematic evolution (see figure 1). Cycles of selection and replication are conducted to narrow down a huge library to aptamers with the best binding properties to the target. In this experiment, an RNA aptamer to the rPrPc protein is selected in vitro. Since a whole SELEX procedures takes several weeks, only one selection cycle is done examplarily.

"Molecules to Materials: Volume 2 Materials to Molecular Fragments"
This book is Volume-2 on the topic of "Molecules to Materials: Materials to Molecular Fragments". The consequences of HR PMR experimental studies on Single Crystalline Solid State resulted in the determination of the principal axes directions and principal components of proton shielding Tensor in a molecule. Significance of the results was the necessity to look into greater detail the inter molecular contribution and intra molecular contribution to proton shielding. These consisted of specific neighborhood contribution from other molecules within 100 Angstroms radius, as well as the contribution of the continuum at large from the entire span of the specimen volume and the specimen shape effects. Over the years, these bulk material consequences could be accounted for satisfactorily with classical magnetic dipole model, the advantage being that the method and this model itself could be found useful for intra molecular shielding tensor calculation. These intra molecular aspects are the considerations in this Volume -II, consists of the papers presented by this author at the Annual Sessions of the Indian Science Congress Association (Kolkata)during the period from year 2009, till 2017.
