Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: Master degree, Hohai University (College of Energy and Electrical Engineering), course: Power Electronics, language: English, abstract: This study employs a buck ZCS (PWM) converter and develops a novel soft-switching approach for charger batteries. This thesis presents technique for battery charger to achieve efficient performance in charging shaping, minimum low switching losses and reduction in circuit volume. The operation of circuit charger is switched with the operation of zero-current-switching, resonant components and appends the topology of dc-dc buck. The proposed novel dc-dc battery charger has advantages with the simplicity, low cost, high efficiency and the behavior of easy control under the ZCS condition accordingly reducing the switching losses. The detailed study of operating principle and circuit design consideration is performed. A short survey of battery charging system, capacity demand & its topological is also presented. In order to compute LC resonant pair values in conventional converter, the method of characteristic curve is used and electric function equations are derived from the prototype configuration. The efficient performance of charging shaping is confirmed through the practical examines and verification of the results is revealed by the MATLAB simulation. The efficiency is ensured about 89% which is substantially considered being satisfactory performance as achieved in this paper. The proposed novel ZCS buck topology thus provides a reliable solution for future battery charger applications.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Electrotechnology, University of Peshawar (University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan), course: High Voltage Direct Current, language: English, abstract: Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has become the most concerned converter topology in the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system, in recent times. The low switching frequency, low converter losses and flexible control made it most attractive topology. It is important to make a research on the loss calculation method of MMC and state formulae for the losses as it is a vital step during the design stage of the MMC based HVDC system. In this research work, the structure of MMC based HVDC system is discussed. Three sub module topologies'; half bridge, full bridge and clamp double sub module, are discussed. A method based on the average and root mean square (RMS) values of the current passing through the sub module is discussed. The conversion losses in the switching devices of the sub modules are calculated using the method. A cases study is taken into consideration then with certain parameters. Using these parameters a MATLAB program is developed. With the help of the program the losses and efficiency curves for each switching device by taking each sub module separately are obtained respectively. A comparison of the losses and efficiency of each sub module is also discussed. At the end those factors which effect the losses and efficiency of the sub module are discussed along with the certain aspects for the directions of future work.

Application of PSO for Optimization of Power Systems under Uncertainty
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1.0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Institute of Electrical Power Systems), course: Electrical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this dissertation is to develop a black box optimization tool. The algorithm should be able to solve complex nonlinear, multimodal, discontinuous and mixed-integer power system optimization problems without any model reduction. Although there are many computational intelligence (CI) basedalgorithms which can handle these problems, they require intense human intervention in the form of parameter tuning, selection of a suitable algorithm for a given problem etc. The idea here is to develop an algorithm that works relatively well on a variety of problems with minimum human effort. The most significant optimization task in the power system operation is the scheduling of various generation resources (Unit Commitment, UC). The current practice used in UC modelling is the binary approach. This modelling results in a high dimension problem. This in turn leads to increased computational effort anddecreased efficiency of the algorithm. A duty cycle based modelling proposed in this thesis results in 80 percent reduction in the problem dimension. The stern uptime and downtime requirements are also included in the modelling. Therefore, the search process mostly starts in a feasible solution space. From the investigations on a benchmark problem, it was found that the new modelling results in high quality solutions along with improved convergence. The final focus of this thesis is to investigate the impact of unpredictable nature of demand and renewable generation on the power system operation. These quantities should be treated as a stochastic processes evolving over time. A new PSO based uncertainty modelling technique is used to abolish the restrictions imposed by the conventional modelling algorithms. The stochastic models are able to incorporate the information regarding the uncertainties and generate day ahead UCschedule that are optimal to not just the forecasted scenario for the demand and renewable generation in feed but also to all possible set of scenarios. These models will assist the operator to plan the operation of the power system consideringthe stochastic nature of the uncertainties. The power system can therefore optimally handle huge penetration of renewable generation to provide economic operation maintaining the same reliability as it was before the introduction of uncertainty.

Automatisiertes Fahren.

Denoising Audio Signal from Various Realistic Noise using Wavelet Transform
Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: P5, Edinburgh Napier University, course: M.Sc in Electronics and Electricals - Digital signal processing, language: English, abstract: Audio signals are more frequently polluted with various types of realistic noises. So, periods ago in order to reduce the noise level, some filtering approach will be used. But, presently there are many transform based techniques to estimate the noisy audio signal. One of the transform technique known as wavelet transform will be used for denoising an audio signal from realistic noise. Predominantly, the objective of this proposed research is to characterise discrete wavelet transform (DWT) towards denoising a one dimensional audio signal from common realistic noise. Moreover, the idea is to implement the audio signal denoising techniques such as decomposition, thresholding (soft) and reconstruction in the MATLAB simulation software, and elaborate a comparative analysis based on choice of wavelet transform over Fourier transform. Likewise, for the different level of decomposition, signal to noise (SNR) will be estimated .To sum up, in this research, different circumstances has been measured to elect best wavelet function and its level, based on its response of signal to noise ratio (SNR) in denoising audio signal.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: Excellent, , course: BS Electrical Engineering, language: English, abstract: Mobile robots have emerged in the recent years as solutions to many real-life situations which occur in an unknown environment. In such cases, the mobile robot must be able to navigate through the unstructured workspace. The purpose of this project is to study and implement stimulus and response based control for real-time navigation of a mobile robot. A fuzzy logic control algorithm has been taken as a proposed behavioural control scheme and successful simulations on MobotSim® are presented before the design of the robot. The design is a compact differentially driven circular mobile robot which fits a 25 x 25 x 30 cm3 box. Moreover, a detachable ball-potting mechanism has also been designed, fabricated, and placed on the robot. The robot was designed in Autodesk Inventor® and the fabrication procedures including casting and machining were used to fabricate different parts. Embedded control system is designed and implemented using PIC18F4520 as master, multiple PIC18F2431 based motor control cards as slaves. IR range sensors have been used to take measurements from the environment. Simulations for PIC micro-controllers have been performed on Proteus® and implemented on hardware. Finally, successful experiments were conducted to verify basic navigation. The platform can further be used to study and implement other control techniques for future research.
