A Graph Theoretical Approach to Pruning Deep Neural Networks
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Computer Sciences - Artificial Intelligence, grade: 100/100, Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) (Economics), course: Business Information Systems - Data Science, language: English, abstract: Imagine a world where deep learning models, despite their immense power, are no longer constrained by computational limitations. This vision fuels the innovative research presented herein, a journey into the realm of efficient deep neural networks through the lens of graph theory. This work introduces MLP-Rank, a groundbreaking method for network pruning that leverages the principles of weighted PageRank to identify and strategically remove redundant connections within multilayer perceptrons (MLPs). By representing the neural network architecture as a graph, the algorithm meticulously assigns importance scores to each connection, allowing for the targeted elimination of less crucial pathways, drastically reducing computational overhead without sacrificing accuracy. The core of this research delves into the algorithm's theoretical underpinnings, exploring its structural adaptations and modifications to the standard PageRank to optimize performance within neural network topologies. Rigorous experimentation across diverse datasets, including MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, and CIFAR-10, and various MLP architectures validates the efficacy of the MLP-Rank method, demonstrating significant improvements in inference speed and model compression. This exploration extends to a critical analysis of the theoretical assumptions against empirical results, bridging the gap between predicted and observed performance, and paving the way for future advancements in deep learning optimization. Discover how the synergy of graph theory and network pruning unlocks a new era of efficient, streamlined deep learning models, poised to revolutionize applications in resource-constrained environments, making AI more accessible and practical than ever before. This research is essential reading for anyone interested in Deep Neural Networks, Network Pruning, Graph Theory, Weighted PageRank, Inference Optimization, Sparsity, Accuracy, Speedup, MLP-Rank, and Model Compression, offering valuable insights into the future of efficient AI. The proposed methodology not only promises faster inference times but also contributes to the development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly AI solutions by reducing the energy footprint of deep learning models.
A Multi Criteria Evaluation of Blockchain Technologies Applied to the Healthcare System
Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 8,5, Leiden University, course: Information and Communication Technologies in Business, language: English, abstract: This research focuses on how blockchain can optimally adapt and improve the healthcare system. It proposes an analysis of the multiple blockchain solutions, proposed until the time of this research, and their technical features. Different blockchain types, as well as different consensus algorithms, result in different benefits, advantages and limitations regarding their application to the healthcare system. This research aims to find out, through a multicriteria evaluation, how these benefits change with different blockchain technologies.Blockchain is the disruptive innovation that will change the way we exchange value. While this innovation is being considered for multiple businesses, its potential to revolutionize the healthcare system is also gaining attention. How useful would it be to access, every time we want, and we need, our full history of health records? Moreover, what if patients could own their medical data? Healthcare system will become patient-centered. On the one hand, the overall quality of healthcare would undoubtedly rise and, on the other hand, costs, risks, and deaths will belikely to decrease. Patients will be able to see a complete picture of their medical history maturing a broader responsibility on their daily routine. They could be the CEO of their health. Doctors will be able to access real-time life-saving data, update records for their patients and so on, avoiding in this way data silos, extra costs and information blocking. However, 'we do not own our data; we just visitthem from time to time' and, interoperability between health providers is still a hurdle to overcome.

A Study in Protocol Obfuscation Techniques and their Effectiveness
Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - IT-Security, grade: 4, Oxford University, language: English, abstract: There are two main reasons for people to hide their network communication. Some want to maintain their privacy, while others need to access resources that might not be available to them due to restrictions applied by a censor.Monitoring of internet usage by the governments is not something new but now many countries have actively started blocking internet content for their citizens. Necessity is the mother of invention. Researchers and developers are working on ingenious ways of bypassing such monitoring and restrictions. In recent years, protocol obfuscation is becoming a burning topic especially because of evolution of some state level censors. Internet users want to freely access resources however censors are deployed by several countries around to world to restrict this access. As the protocol obfuscation techniques are gradually improving and so are the censors.Meanwhile, there are some internet users who do not live in countries that restrict their access to the internet resources in any way but these individuals are concerned about confidentiality of their internet use. Government agencies are frequently in the media over accusations of spying, on their own citizens as well as citizens of other countries, which is making many internet users alarmed about their anonymity. Both censors and circumvention tools are evolving continuously and gradually. The aim of this study was to analyse the protocol obfuscation techniques and systems available to ordinary internet users. The efficiency of these techniques and systems is assessed in the light of available research in respect of detecting obfuscated protocols. Once a research proves that an obfuscation technique can be successfully attacked it makes it easier to implement possible mitigations and the research also provides guidance to the developers of future protocol obfuscation systems so that they learn from the mistakes of others. It was noted that all the protocol obfuscation systems researched in this study are vulnerable to detection. In some cases, the detection does not even require the use of sophisticated resources.
A study on network intrusion detection using classifiers
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, VIT University, language: English, abstract: In these days of rising internet usage, almost everyone has access to the internet. It is available easily and readily. So along with increase in popularity and importance it also leads to an increase in risks and susceptibility to unwanted attacks. Networks and servers and more prone to malicious attacks than ever. Cyber security is vital in this age. Lots of organizations now interact and communicate with people via the internet. They store huge amounts of data in their computers or devices connected to the network. This data should only be accessed by authorized members of the organization. It is possible for hackers to gain unauthorized access to this data. A lot of sensitive information is present in the data which might lead to harm in the hands of hackers. It is important to protect the network from being attacked in such a way. Network security is an element of cyber security which aims to provide services so that the organizations are safe from such attacks. Intrusion detection systems are present in the network which work along with the firewalls to detect and prevent such attacks. For this project, we aim to identify the suitable machine learning technique to detect such attacks and which can be used in state of the art system.
A Survey on Requirements Elicitation
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 1998 in the subject Computer Science - Software, grade: 0, University of Kaiserslautern, language: English, abstract: The first step during the software development, requirements engineering, is very critical because of the high effort (in time and costs) that has to be made to correct mistakes detected later that have been made in this early phase of software life-cycle. In order to support the aim of high-quality software, the goals of requirements engineering are developing a complete as possible specification, providing integrated representation formalismsand accomplishing a common agreement on the specification. The very first activity that has to be passed through is requirements elicitation. There are existing three main problems: the problem of defining the scope, the problem of understandingthe users' needs and the problem of requirements volatility over time. You can follow several heuristics and guidelines to find solutions to these problems. In addition, several techniques and methodologies have been suggested to support the process ofrequirements elicitation. They differ in several ways: the kind of problem they intend to solve, the methods used for achieving this aim, the kind of people involved, the level of abstraction and precision the requirements have to be formulated in.In this report, a selection of these techniques and methodologies is chosen and they are classified into a classification scheme worked out. The techniques and methodologies can coarsely be divided into four classes: interview-oriented approaches, objective andgoal analysis-oriented approaches, viewpoint analysis-oriented approaches, and scenario analysis-oriented approaches. There are others that do not fit into this division, but provide nevertheless help for requirements elicitation. The developed classificationscheme highlights the differences between the existing techniques. It should serve as an overview of existing techniques and methods as a guideline for analysts and developers for finding an appropriate method for problems at hand.
A Survey on Today's Smartphone Usage
Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, Technical University of Berlin (Agententechnologien in betrieblichen Anwendungen), language: English, abstract: The smartphone market is evolving rapidly, irrespective of the well-known spread within the business sector. In recent years the average users tend to replace their traditional mobile phones, PDAs and Palms with smartphones. These devices have become a pervasive part of everyday life. Dealing with huge amounts of data, the mobile device's and application's demand for certain security standards cannot be underestimated. In recent studies the individual user's needs in terms of technical features, applications etc. have not been addressed and analyzed properly. To capture the problem in its full extent it is vital to understand the user's expectations. Besides, the usage patterns have to be described especially against the background of security aspects. As mentioned before, recent analyzes did not specifically ask what the user expects from a smartphone. Hence, the main objective of this work is to get a broad picture on how smartphones are used today and what users expect, taking into consideration security aspects..An international web-based online survey was designed and performed to measure and analyze users' behaviour when using smartphones, with the aim of finding out what they want and expect from a smartphone. The main goals were to identify user needs in the context of smartphones, to analyze their knowledge and acquisition to security aspects and to get significant data about the user's behaviour. The main findings of the survey are that on the one hand, most of the users want a smartphone to provide classic mobile phone features, such as performing phone calls, writing messages or storing contacts. On the other hand they want a smartphone to provide mobile internet access, navigation features, multimedia aspects, a comfortable usability and a good look and feel/design. The brand, price and battery performance plays a minor role for them. With respect to security aspects, most of the users have a good knowledge about security in general, pointing out that the security of the smartphone is a very important aspect for them. The obtained results can be provided as recommendations to smartphone vendors, application developers and carriers, who can use them in product portfolio management and product development
A Web-Based Prototype Course Recommender System using Apache Mahout
Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: BSc Honours in Computer Science, , course: Honors research project, language: English, abstract: Most universities offer a wide range of courses in which students can enrol. As a result, students may feel overwhelmed with the many possibilities and large amount of information, resulting in having a difficult time deciding what to sign up for. To this end, there is a need for a system that can assist students in this crucial process. Thus, we set out to develop a web-based recommender application that could generate a list of valuable, accurate course recommendations, taking into account a student's likelihood of succeeding academically.Choosing an effective and stimulating set of courses is not an easy task for a student. There are several factors at play when it comes to choosing courses that one must study. One of these factors may be the assumed difficulty of a course that a student is considering to take. Of course, if the course is compulsory, then the student has no choice but to enrol in it. However, in the situation in where there are many different subjects to choose from, the student may shy away from taking optional courses that might pose a significant challenge, in terms of workload or being unable to fully understand the course content. These courses would clearly have a negative effect on academic performance. However, there may also be some students who are looking to be challenged, and for whom choosing more difficult courses would be an exciting challenge. In terms of academic performance, effective course selection is of utmost importance in ensuring a student is able to succeed in her or his studies and obtain their qualification(s).
