A Survey on Today's Smartphone Usage
Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, Technical University of Berlin (Agententechnologien in betrieblichen Anwendungen), language: English, abstract: The smartphone market is evolving rapidly, irrespective of the well-known spread within the business sector. In recent years the average users tend to replace their traditional mobile phones, PDAs and Palms with smartphones. These devices have become a pervasive part of everyday life. Dealing with huge amounts of data, the mobile device's and application's demand for certain security standards cannot be underestimated. In recent studies the individual user's needs in terms of technical features, applications etc. have not been addressed and analyzed properly. To capture the problem in its full extent it is vital to understand the user's expectations. Besides, the usage patterns have to be described especially against the background of security aspects. As mentioned before, recent analyzes did not specifically ask what the user expects from a smartphone. Hence, the main objective of this work is to get a broad picture on how smartphones are used today and what users expect, taking into consideration security aspects..An international web-based online survey was designed and performed to measure and analyze users' behaviour when using smartphones, with the aim of finding out what they want and expect from a smartphone. The main goals were to identify user needs in the context of smartphones, to analyze their knowledge and acquisition to security aspects and to get significant data about the user's behaviour. The main findings of the survey are that on the one hand, most of the users want a smartphone to provide classic mobile phone features, such as performing phone calls, writing messages or storing contacts. On the other hand they want a smartphone to provide mobile internet access, navigation features, multimedia aspects, a comfortable usability and a good look and feel/design. The brand, price and battery performance plays a minor role for them. With respect to security aspects, most of the users have a good knowledge about security in general, pointing out that the security of the smartphone is a very important aspect for them. The obtained results can be provided as recommendations to smartphone vendors, application developers and carriers, who can use them in product portfolio management and product development
A Web-Based Prototype Course Recommender System using Apache Mahout
Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: BSc Honours in Computer Science, , course: Honors research project, language: English, abstract: Most universities offer a wide range of courses in which students can enrol. As a result, students may feel overwhelmed with the many possibilities and large amount of information, resulting in having a difficult time deciding what to sign up for. To this end, there is a need for a system that can assist students in this crucial process. Thus, we set out to develop a web-based recommender application that could generate a list of valuable, accurate course recommendations, taking into account a student's likelihood of succeeding academically.Choosing an effective and stimulating set of courses is not an easy task for a student. There are several factors at play when it comes to choosing courses that one must study. One of these factors may be the assumed difficulty of a course that a student is considering to take. Of course, if the course is compulsory, then the student has no choice but to enrol in it. However, in the situation in where there are many different subjects to choose from, the student may shy away from taking optional courses that might pose a significant challenge, in terms of workload or being unable to fully understand the course content. These courses would clearly have a negative effect on academic performance. However, there may also be some students who are looking to be challenged, and for whom choosing more difficult courses would be an exciting challenge. In terms of academic performance, effective course selection is of utmost importance in ensuring a student is able to succeed in her or his studies and obtain their qualification(s).

Genome annotation and finding repetitive DNA elements
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - Bioinformatics, grade: 8.26, Lovely Professional University, Punjab, course: b.tech honors biotechnology, language: English, abstract: As the number of genomes sequenced is increasing at high rate, there is a need of gene prediction method which is quick, reliable, inexpensive. In such conditions, the computations tool will serve as an alternative to wet lab methods. The confidence level of annotation by the tool can be enhanced by preparing exhaustive training data sets. The aim is to develop a tool which will read data from a DNA sequence file in the fasta format and will annotate it. For this purpose Genome Database was used to retrieve the input data. PERL programming has been put to develop this tool for annotation. To increase the confidence level of annotation the data was validated from multiple sources. Perl script was written to find the promoter region, repeats, transcription factor binding site, base periodicity, and nucleotide frequency. The program written was also executed to identify repeats, poly (A) signals, CpG islands, ARS. The tool will annotate the DNA by predicting the gene structure based on the consensus sequences of important regulatory elements. The confidence level of annotation of the predicted gene, non-coding region, ARS, repeats etc. were checked by running test dataset. This test dataset was annotated data as reported by genome database and computational tools. Gene prediction of the non-coding regions as reported by genome database (SGD) were performed by existing tools; the regions identified as non-coding by these tools were then analyzed for presence of repeats. The BLAST was used to annotate on the basis of sequence similarity with the already annotated genes.GeneMark.hmm and FGENESH were used for gene prediction. In order to validate the predicted results, annotations of genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae from SGD Database, and output of different computational tools viz, Emboss-CpGplot, PolyAh, REPFind, Promoter 2.0 Prediction Server were compared with the output of developed tool. The output generated was also used for validation and checking sensitivity of the tool. Such tools reduce the cost and time required for genome annotation and bridge the gap between sequenced and annotated data. The output generated by the developed tool was also used for validation and checking sensitivity of the tool. Such tools reduce the cost and time required for genome annotation and bridge the gap between sequenced and annotated data.

In Silico Modeling and Identification of Novel Epitopes-based Vaccine of M polyprotein (Gn/Gc) against Schmallenberg Virus for Ruminants
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Computer Science - Bioinformatics, , language: English, abstract: Schmallenberg (SBV) is a new virus of the Bunyaviridae family within the genus Orthobunyavirus. The viral infection causes mild clinical signs: fever, reduced milk production and diarrhea, as well as considerable economic loss. There is currently no treatment or vaccine for infected animals. We aimed to design a peptide vaccine using an Immunoinformatics approach to stimulate the immune system and reduce the potentially negative effects of using live vaccines. In this study, a total of 47 strains of complete M polyprotein sequence (Gn/NSm/GC) and 61 strains of nonstructural protein in S segment (NSs) of Schmallenberg virus which were chosen for this study were taken from NCBI. Potentially continuous B and T cell epitopes were predicted using tools from immune epitope data base analysis resource (IEDB-AR). We found that Gn and Gc regions of M polyprotein in SBV were clearly suitable and could be used for the preparation of immunological constructs. Our studies suggest that: B cell epitope 764QQQACSS770 and CTL epitopes 251YMYNKYFKL259, 46SECCVKDDI54 and 234IVYVFIPIF242 could be used as a potential vaccine candidate against SBV.We consider this study distinctive because no research ever dealt with peptide-based vaccines on virulent strains of SBV using an in silico approach.
IT-Portfoliomanagement.
