"Art Attack".
"Bringing order to the mess" - A critical re-examination of the core concepts of secularization theory
Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Religion, grade: 6 (entspricht 1 in Dtschld.), University of Bern, course: Religionssoziologie, language: English, abstract: Despite Rodney Stark¿s postulate "to carry the secularization doctrine to the graveyard of failed theories" (Stark 1999:22) or David Martin¿s demand "towards eliminating the concept of secularization" (Martin 1965), the discourse on secularization seems to be as alive as ever. Indeed, from its beginnings to present the idea of secularization lies at the very core of sociological imagination. Hardly any other subject caused as much controversy among scholars as to if and how processes of secularization interrelate with the emergence of "modernity". This has led to a multitude of publications over the last decades, all redefining, defending, refuting or even rejecting secularization theory altogether. One of the main difficulties resulting from this ever expanding literature on secularization is the diverse and often undifferentiated usage of categories such as "the secular", "secularization" and "secularism". Similar to other social-scientific macro concepts the term "secularization" is multidimensional. Depending on the context and academic discipline, it is applied very differently, thus leaving the door wide open for manifold possibilities of interpretations and meanings. This especially poses problems to any empirical researcher; as such an amorphous term with respectively different meanings and ambiguous possibilities of interpretation is hard to operationalize (Casanova 1994: 12). The aim of this paper is therefore, to critically review the main concepts of secularization theory. For this purpose, I will analytically distinguish between "the secular" as a theological category of Western Christendom, "secularization" as a historical process referring to state-church relations and "secularization" as an analytical conceptualization of modern world-historical processes. By doing so, I hope to identify some of the core problems that inevitably appear when trying to apply seemingly self-understanding concepts about the "secular" to other parts of the world.

"Weil du arm bist, musst du früher sterben"?

(In)convenient truth. A small-scale study addressing attitudes and values found in Finnish policing
Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Sociology - Law and Delinquency, grade: Pass, University of Portsmouth (Institute of Criminal Justice Studies), course: Professional Doctorate in Criminal Justice Studies, language: English, abstract: Among popular perceptions of the Nordic countries, cleanliness, organisation and safety are common. One of the agencies responsible for the up-keep of public safety is the Finnish police. As with the other Nordic policing organisations, this appears to be done in a calm and non-confrontational way. To discover if reality lives up to the image, a small-scale research project was conducted. This involved a series of focus groups comprising of policing personnel and was intended to gain insight into the values and attitudes of criminal justice professionals. The focus groups took the form of semi-structured interviews. Recordings and transcripts were analysed for themes that may help to understand how the professionals in question perceive their role and function in a modern policing agency. Among the issues mentioned by the participants was a degree of frustration at the limited resources that were available to them. These points were apparently seen as irritations rather than major challenges. For the participants, issues of impartiality and motivation were consistently expressed and appeared to be of considerable relevance. In support of this, they reported achieving motivation through adherence to legal statutes and procedural protocols, and in so doing they felt that they were "doing the job properly" rather than simply "catching bad guys". This may be the key to the non-confrontational calm of the Nordic image. These findings are corroborated by external sources as Finland's judicial system and police organisation are internationally acknowledged as providing an impartial and trustworthy service to the population of that country.

A comparison of Costa Rican and German culture according to Hofstede's Dimensions
Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, grade: 1,5, Fresenius University of Applied Sciences Hamburg (Wirtschaft), language: English, abstract: Through this term paper, the reader is given an understanding of the Costa Rican and German culture and an instrument to play the Costa Rican and German social game.In order to play the social game, it is advisable to take a closer look at the unwritten book and thus be able to understand the rules. Developing strong skills in communication and conflict resolution is increasing in value and importance due to an internationally linked world. For this reason, the topic of culture is addressed with a special focus on two contrasting societies. The aim is to show the reader some specific peculiarities of the Costa Rican and German culture. First, the concept of culture is discussed. It will be explained what culture is and how it is created. Furthermore, it will be described how culture influences individuals and which role countries play in it. In the next step, the reader is introduced to Hofstede's six Dimensions of National Culture. These serve as a tool for classifying and analysing cultures and their values. It will be explained how Hofstede's dimensions were developed, what they mean and what values they represent. After the dimensions have been presented, Costa Ricäs and Germany's achieved scores are mentioned. Typical Costa Rican and German behavioural patterns, values and characteristics are then assigned to all dimensions. Then, an attempt to explain the achieved results is made on this basis. At the same time, it is intended to draw attention to the values lying behind the behaviours.
AI Killing in the Name of Past and Future. Identifying Counterfactual and Hypothetical Narratives Justifying the Decision to Deploy Data-Based Military Technology by the US Military
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, grade: 1,3, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (Kulturwissenschaften), language: English, abstract: The decision to integrate and deploy data-based enhanced advanced military weapon systems as a military solution by the US military is inspected more closely. In order to narrow the scope, this work will focus on narratives of hypothetical and counterfactual nature, drawing on a cultural scientific theory of decision-making. Whereas hypothetical narratives leverage consequences of decisions, counterfactuals focus on the contingent nature of decisions by highlighting not-selected alternatives within the decision-making process and their potential outcomes. Within the field of data-based technology, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the decision making surrounding the technology, both hypothetical future scenarios and their counterfactual counterparts can be identified. While hypotheticals focus on anticipating future developments of a technology with unclear capabilities, counterfactual narratives are used to fix shortcomings in the past by providing a seemingly universally applicable solution. Both narratives create distorted impressions of the usefulness and prowess of Artificial Intelligence. Counterfactual and hypothetical narratives justifying the decision by the US military to deploy data-based technology will be examined from a standpoint of cultural-scientific analysis of decision-making. The integration of these technologies into the realm of warfare was initiated under a unique constellation of social and political structures that are intertwined with the decision-making process. Investigating the circumstances in which a decision was made will enable the examination of narratives that justify the decision. The decision to implement a technology should be supported by a strategic necessity. It also ought to be preceded by establishing sufficient infrastructure to and enable the technology to fulfil its intended role. Moreover, narratives justifying the decision are meant to ward off criticism of blindly integrating AI into military applications. By providing exemplary criticism detailing possible consequences of the decision in warfare, the validity of narratives defending the decision is questioned. These referenced phenomena detail how civilians and non-combatants are increasingly put at risk and expose loopholes that could be used to violate International Human Law while avoiding direct responsibility for one's actions.
American Jihadists. The New Wave of Terror
Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - War and Peace, Military, grade: 100.00, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Metropolitan Campus, course: Assessing Internal and External Threats, language: English, abstract: The events of September 11, 2001 changed the way the United States viewed terrorism forever. In a matter of hours, al Qaeda transformed from a foreign and incapable threat to a force to be reckoned with. This group had succeeded where many others had failed: bringing terror to our homeland.Unfortunately, 9/11 was not an isolated event. Since then, there have been numerous groups aspiring to invade the US and bring terrorism to American soil. Al Qaeda was but an example of how a network of seemingly primitive individuals can quickly become organized and sophisticated. Despite being viewed as unbelievably ruthless and violent, dealing with al Qaeda did nothing to prepare the US and the rest of the world for the rise of what has become arguably the most bloodthirsty terrorist organization to date-the Islamic State (ISIS).Despite their continuous atrocities, they have successfully increased their numbers to over 31,000. One would immediately wonder who these individuals are that seek to join a group of bloodthirsty terrorists, however, the answer to that question is even more shocking than the question itself. Of the estimated 31,000 members roughly 15,000 are foreign born-some of which are from Western nations. It is difficult to believe that so many Westerners would be willing to commit whole-heartedly to this life of violence against their own people, however, former terrorists indicate that once recruited, any semblance of morality is often replaced with a sense of duty to further the terrorist movement. Due to the potential consequences of American membership in groups like ISIS, it is imperative to determine what causes these individuals to abandon all allegiance to their home nations and carryout attacks against their fellow countrymen. This paper shall identify and analyze the common character traits and environmental elements that push Western citizens towards terrorism and use these qualities to identify those with the highest likelihood of joining ISIS.

Anglo-Saxon festivals, traditions, and celebrations in America and Britain
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: The paper is supposed to provide a truly comprehensive annotated reference work giving information on national festivals and holidays, with descriptive entries covering religious, cultural, ethnic, historical, popular, and sports celebrations from Britain and America, with sections on calendar systems, and tables of state and national public holidays. The range of festivals and secular holidays in the various countries of the world is now vast. In modern times the proliferation of national and local events has also resulted in scores of special group days, and even whimsical and bizarre observances, ranging from very unique celebration of All Saints Day both in Poland and Ireland, to the Rat's Wedding Day in China. Nevertheless, this thesis focuses on the Anglo-Saxon festivals, traditions and holidays as celebrated in America and Britain. The celebration of special days and seasons, both religious and secular, is universal. From primitive times onward, special rites and festivals marked the religious mysteries of existence - the miracle of birth, life, death, and rebirth in the environment and in individual human experience. Such celebrations fulfilled a deep-seated longing in the human psyche, evoking profound emotions associated with the changing pattern of the year, the expecting of spring, the joys of summer, the harvest, the decline of the year through fall to the rigors of winter, and the promise of a new spring coming. Inevitably such celebrations involved a measurement of time, so that seasonal festivals could take place at appropriate dates in the cycle of the year.
Antisemitismus

Bali - mass tourism in developing countries
Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, grade: Good, La Trobe University Melbourne (Sociology), course: Development, Globalisation and Culture, language: English, abstract: To be in a paradise which is exotic, strange, with amazing landscapes and people who are not affected by corrupted society, is the main reason for tourists to visit foreign countries. However, the questions is, if increasing tourism would be an advantage or a disadvantage for the potential host country, and how tourism affects the economy, society, the and the local environment. International tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy and represents profitability for the visiting country and positively impacts the economy. The question is, whether the economic advantage compensates the damage, which is inflicted to the society, environment and the culture by the tourists.
