Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2024 in the subject Biology - Botany, , language: English, abstract: The study examined the properties of various plant extracts. Dracaena cinnabari of which that exhibited the highest ethanol extractive value, low moisture content, and contained specific phytochemical classes. Valachia nilotica subsp. indica, Capparis cartilaginea, and Fagonia paulayana displayed variations in their phytochemical profiles. Gas-Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier- Transform Infrared Spectroscoy (FTIR) analysis aided in identifying the bioactive compounds present in these medicinal plants, suggesting their potential for therapeutic applications. The findings provide valuable insights into the properties and potential uses of these plant extracts (Ethanol70% and Aqueous).Dracenia cinnabari, Capparis cartilaginea, Vachellia nilotica subspecies indica, and Fagonia paulayana are medicinal plants used in traditional Yemen medicine for the treatment a variety of infectious and non-infectious diseases. These plants were selected to evaluate their potential antibacterial, antifungal and Trichomoniasis- anti activity. The plant samples (Aden, Lahaj, and Abyan governorates. Dracaena cinnabari. specimens were collected from different locations on the island of Socotraduring the winter of 2019) used in this study were processed at the biology laboratory of the Faculty of Education in Aden. Microbiological procedures, including the isolation and identification of bacteria, fungi, and Trichomonas vaginalis, were conducted at the laboratories of the Supreme Board of Drugs and Medical Appliances. The research took place from January 2020 to August 2023, focusing on the city of Aden in Yemen. The study encompassed various healthcare facilities, both public and private, including the German Aden Hospital, Al-Sadqah Hospital, Al-Madinah Medical Center, Al-Hanan Medical Center, and Aden German International Hospital. The choice of Aden was based on its environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, humidity, and inadequate hygiene prastic, which contribute to the increased prevalence of bacterial and fungal infections.

Evaluation of maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines under heat stress and normal condition
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Twenty maize genotypes were tested in alpha-lattice design with two replications in research block of National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan from February to June, 2016 to evaluate maize inbred lines for their genetic components association among yield components and correlation and stress tolerance indices. Shorter ASI was found in RML-17, RML-57, RL-107, RL-140, RML-91 whereas more leaf area index in NML-2, RML-91, and RML-24 respectively. Inbred lines, RML-91, RML-17, RML-20, RL-140, RL-140, RML-91 and NML-2 were found lower tassel blast and leaf firing percentage respectively. Inbred lines, RML-76,RML-115,RML-4,RL-111 showed slower leaf senescence and RML-57, RL-101, RML-11, RL-107 showed significant higher value of SPAD chlorophyll content. Heritability and correlation analysis revealed that grain yield, number of kernel ear-1, silk receptivity, shelling percentage, thousand kernel weight plant and ear heights showed presence of additive gene effect and those traits direct could be used as direct selection to improve maize grain yield under heat stress condition. With attention to high negative correlation with anthesis silking interval, tassel blast, leaf firing with grain yield the minimum of anthesis silking interval, tassel blast and leaf firing were the most important index required further genotyping for development of thermo-tolerance lines. Cluster and PCA analysis revealed that cluster 4 genotype named as RL-140, RML-76, RML-40 and RML-91 were found to be tolerant to heat stress with higher value of grain yield and other desirable traits and lower leaf firing, Tassel blast and itermediate of anthesis-silking interval which were suitable for cultivation under heat stress condition.Based on stress tolerance indices and their correlation analysis, RML-91, RML-140 appeared as having high yield potential and low stress susceptibility under normal and heat stress condition.
Factors Affecting Fusarium Head Blight Development and Trichothecene Accumulation in Fusarium-infected Wheat Heads
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: none, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, language: English, abstract: Fusarium head blight caused by Fusarium graminearum Schwabe is an economically important disease as it results in yield and quality losses of infected grain and the accumulation of mycotoxins produced by the invading fungus. Though it is well established that moisture around the anthesis period promotes FHB development and trichothecene accumulation, the role of moisture from anthesis to harvest has been largely overlooked. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of environmental factors, especially moisture, host resistance, and pathogen variation on infection, FHB disease development and mycotoxin production and accumulation in planta. The split-split-plot Field experiments were conducted in 2006-2008. Main plots were the duration of mist-irrigation after inoculation. Three wheat cultivars used as sub-plots were Alsen, 2375 and Wheaton. Sub-sub-plots were F. graminearum isolates. Plots were inoculated twice, at anthesis. FHB severity was assessed 21 dai. Visually scabby kernels, deoxynivalenol, 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol and nivalenol were determined on grain harvested at maturity. Additionally, in 2007 and 2008, whole heads were sampled at 0, 7, 11, 14, 21, 28 and 41 dai analyzed for mycotoxins. Severity, VSK and the DON concentration of mature grain, were significantly higher in the susceptible wheat cultivar Wheaton than in the other two cultivars examined. Although FHB severities were not significantly different in plots receiving different durations of mist irrigation ,VSK were significantly lower in the treatments receiving the least amount of mist-irrigation than for treatments receiving mist-irrigation for longer periods, suggesting that extended periods of moisture promote disease development. DON was however significantly lower in the longest misting treatment than those treatments receiving less water. In the whole head samples, DON and other trichothecene either declined with increased durations of mist-irrigation or remained low while water was being applied by the misting system. However, trichothecene accumulation was observed to increase after the cessation of mist-irrigation. Our results suggest that longer durations of moisture after inoculation may increase the FHB severity and VSK, although DON and other trichothecene concentrations may be concomitantly reduced. Leaching may explain the reduction of DON observed in extended misting duration treatments.

Genetic Divergence Studies in Bottle Gourd. The Plant Lagenaria Siceraria
Scientific Study from the year 2020 in the subject Biology - Botany, , course: M.sc. Horticulture (Vegetable Science), language: English, abstract: The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Thirty genotypes were evaluated for various quantitative and quality traits. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the traits. The maximum fruit yield plant-1 was recorded in Shalimar improved (7.57 kg) followed by SH-BG-72 (7.30 kg), SH-BG-17 (7.28 kg) and minimum in SH-BG-53 (4.32 kg). The estimates of phenotypic coefficient of variance were slightly higher than the corresponding genotypic coefficient of variance for all the characters studied indicating the little influence of environment in the expression of these traits. The highest phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were observed for fruit diameter (35.65 and 34.62) followed by total chlorophyll (30.08 and 20.02) and fruit length (23.70 and 23.44). High heritability coupled with high genetic gain was recorded for fruit length (0.97 and 47.74), fruit diameter (0.94 and 71.73), total sugars (0.74 and 24.05) and dry matter content (0.84 and 25.42) indicating that the heritability is most likely due to additive gene effects and thus the chances of fixing by selection are more. Fruit yield plant-1 was positively associated with traits like node number at which first male flower appeared, node number at which first female flower appeared, number of days to anthesis of first female flower, fruit diameter, dry matter content and total sugars. Moreover the traits like days to last fruit harvest and number of fruits plant-1 showed significant positive genotypic correlation with fruit yield plant-1 indicating that direct selection of these traits will be effective. Path coefficient analysis revealed appreciable amount of direct positive effects of component traits like node number at which first male flower appeared, days to anthesis of first female flower, days to last fruit harvest, number of fruits plant-1, fruit weight plant-1 and total sugars on fruit yield plant-1. D2 statistics grouped thirty genotypes of bottle gourd into three clusters. Cluster I had maximum number of genotypes (25) followed by cluster II (4) and cluster III (1).

Impact of Clarias gariepinus Burchell. Farm Effluent Irrigation on the Growth and Germination of Abelmoschus esculentus (L) Moench and Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: A, University of Port Harcourt (Faculty of Sciences), language: English, abstract: The aim of this experimental research is to Study the effect of catfish farm effluent on the growth and germination of Abelmoschus esculentus and Vigna unguiculata. When fish are harvested from ponds, the effluent is often drained, presenting both an environmental threat and an agricultural wealth. Effluent discharge which is sequel to pond draining, has posed serious environmental threat, such effluent are often allowed to run into natural water ways, posing a potential source of pollution and eutrophication of water bodies.Clarias gariepinus, has been preferred for culture amongst fish farmers due to its ease of adaptability, less maintenance required, ease of multiplication and less demand for quality of water. Nonetheless culture of C. gariepinus, has become large enough to have significant impacts on the environment and natural resources, and a number of concerns have been expressed by both environmental activists and scientists.
