A Review of degradation status of the Mau Forest and Possible Remedial Measures
Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: 8, Wageningen University, language: English, abstract: Deforestation and degradation of forests continue at alarmingly high rate, particularly in the tropics. Kenya's annual deforestation rate is estimated at 0.5%, putting at stake the survival of the timber industry and livelihood of forest dependent communities. The Mau forest is one of few remaining indigenous forests in Kenya with high deforestation rate. The forest supports the livelihood of the indigenous and surrounding communities and is major water catchment for the Eastern Africa region. This paper discusses the importance of the Mau forest and impacts of its degradation on the indigenous, national and regional communities, and proposes possible strategies to curb degradation of the forest. It is shown that degradation of the forest stems from activities of the surrounding communities, overpopulation and weaknesses in national laws and their enforcement. Several strategies are suggested; including involvement of the indigenous community in forest management, population control and the implementation of far reaching reforms in the forest and land sectors. It is recommended that since the benefits of the Mau forest are international, a debt¿for¿nature swap or similar schemes should be introduced to free national income for development and reduce the reliance on forest resources.

Agricultural Production In Nigeria. A Review of Recent Developments in Policy and Practice
Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Agrarian Studies, South Bank University London, language: English, abstract: This article draws on critical review of research articles, official statistics and policy documents on agricultural production in Nigeria, especially since the beginning of the current democratic dispensation in 1999. This paper highlights the findings of researchers and policy makers on the significant gains made in the agricultural sector, especially in terms of increased productivity of staple crops like cassava and rice. However, this review also identifies significant gaps in knowledge and deficiencies in practice, in the areas of innovation diffusion among rural farmers, market reforms, engagement in high value chains, and the politics of policy implementation and evaluation.

An Analysis of the Rice Market Integration in Uganda
Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 3.5, Makerere University (College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences), course: Master of Science in Agribusiness Management, language: English, abstract: It is crucial that formulation of market enhancing policies to improve performance hinges on a better understanding of the local market functioning. Comprehensive market performance is better understood by studying the extent of spatial market integration which in turn is affected by communication factors like telephony growth and extension services within the marketing system. Extension services are important in influencing levels of production and dissemination of trade information of both the inputs to and output from the enterprise. Unfortunately very little was known about how rice price transmission takes place. Given the importance of rice (as a food security crop & source of income) to the rural poor, many organizations have promoted it among rural farmers for improving their welfare, it was imperative that its price movements is studied to inform policy makers & implementers on the status of its spatial market integration. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial market integration of rice markets under improving communication infrastructure particularly extension services (NAADS program) and telecommunication industry growth. This study specifically evaluated the degree of spatial market integration and strength of integration using bivariate analysis, Johansen Multiple test, and granger causality relationships. It also determined the impact of NAADS program and telecommunications on spatial rice market integration. Impulse response functions were generated to determine how long shocks in Kampala market can be eliminated in peripheral markets. Weekly prices data from sixteen markets from 2000 to 2006 were divided into three phases; full sample, pre - NAADS expansion and post NAADS program expansion to enable the study to capture the impact of these communication infrastructure. Results from this study indicate that the markets are spatially integrated and with an incredible speed over the study period. Comparatively, there was more co integration and interdependence of rice markets in the post-NAADS expansion phase than the pre - NAADS expansion phase. A further analysis of the markets using multivariate analytical approach revealed a growing rice economic market constituting eight markets; Kampala, Jinja, Iganga, Lira and Rakai including Gulu, Mbale and Soroti markets with which growth began in the pre-expansion period.
Assessing Poverty Situations: A Case Study of Cocoa Farming Households in the Asikuma-Odoben Brakwa District of the Central Region
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1, University of Cape Coast, course: Bsc Agriculture, language: English, abstract: Ghana has achieved substantial poverty reduction over the last 15 years and is on track of reducing its poverty rate by half before the target date of 2015 for the Millennium development Goals. The objective of this study is to document this remarkable achievement, and more broadly to review the evidence on a range of issues related to poverty reduction among cocoa farmers in Asikumah-Odoben-Brakwa of the Central Region using the most recent household survey data available The study aims to determine the contributions of cocoa farming activities to household income and consumption; to determine their level of access to basic services ; to determine the contribution of cocoa into the general well-being of the people and to make recommendations on how the cocoa industry could be used to improve the living standard of the Ghanaian rural communities. The study would rely on some comparable selected Core Welfare Indicators Survey (CWIQ) for 1997 and 2003 pertaining to Asikumah-Odoben-Brakwa District. In conclusion, the study found out that cocoa farming coupled with government provision of other social services has contributed in reducing poverty in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District thus most cocoa farming households are above the upper poverty line. Notwithstanding that, the study strongly recommends that government and other key stakeholders look at improving the health needs, provision of decent housing scheme and monitoring the usage of cocoa weighing scales to guaranty fairness.

Association between cognitive failure and health related quality of life indices
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Biology - Diseases, Health, Nutrition, Tai Solarin University of Education, course: Biology, language: English, abstract: There seems to be epidemiological associations between quality of life and cognitive failure yet, studies determining the relationship between quality of life indices and cognitive failure have been sparse. In addition, no studies examining this relationship have been carried out in Nigerian population. To determine the association between quality of life indices and cognitive failure in a Nigerian sample.A cross-sectional study of 1,338 participants with diverse age groups, ethnicity and socioeconomic levels from three different States and regions in Nigeria recruited from eleven public hospitals between May 2014 and August 2014. Cognitive failure in relation to quality of life domains centring on physical and occupational functioning, perceptions about health status, psychological and social functioning were determined using linear and logistic regressions after adjusting for age, ethnicity, education, gender, marital status, family type, alcohol and smoking status. In the adjusted models, four of the indices for measuring quality of life domains were significantly associated with cognitive failures: worrying about health problems (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.095; 95% CI, 1.05-1.14), health-related impairment in daily activities (AOR, 1.138; 95% CI, 1.09-1.93) and increased hospitalization (AOR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.24-1.94) were associated with increased cognitive failures whereas showing care for one's health (AOR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.89-0.96) was associated with decreased levels of cognitive failure. Linear regression analysis on these data recapitulated these results. Quality of life research appears to be vital for health needs assessment of populations and could have profound implications for cognitive failure and other health-related outcome assessment in biology, medicine and health services research.

Awareness level and prevention of Dengue among the students of Bula national school of fisheries
Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject Biology - Diseases, Health, Nutrition, , language: English, abstract: This paper describe the demographic profile of the students and the level of Dengue awareness and prevention among them. It also determines the significant difference in the level of dengue awareness when classified according to gender, grade level, and socioeconomic status, and the significant relationship between the level of dengue awareness and the level of dengue prevention of students. Dengue the mosquito borne disease is a growing health treat in a whole world. The lack of awareness and prevention in dengue can cause a lot of problems. This study used a descriptive normative survey and the use of simple random sampling to gain a lot of information from an individual or a group perspective. Results found that the distribution of respondents according to grade level and gender is widely from grade 6 and is mostly female. Also the students of BNSF have a moderate level of dengue awareness and prevention. Furthermore, there is no significant difference in level of awareness according to grade level, gender, or socioeconomic status. The outcome also found that the relationship between the level of dengue awareness and the nature of illness, early symptoms and cause is not significant. These findings suggest that having a program like orientation and seminar can improve the students knowledge and awareness. Fogging and the use of insect repellent are effect ways to prevent dengue disease.
Barriers and opportunities in management and conservation of protected areas in Cambodia
Scientific Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, Wageningen University, language: English, abstract: Protected area has long history in natural reserve in Cambodia and its idea is not new to this nation. It has been introduced for not only management and conservation of ecosystem but also protection of cultural value and landscape. In 1925, 10,800 hectares of forests surrounding Angkor temple was declared as the first national park in Southeast Asia. To respond to the loss of biodiversity in the nation, conservation and management effort has been made continuously. In 1957, one third of country has been allocated into 173 forest reserves and six wildlife reserves and most of those sites currently declared as the protected areas which offer recreation services to the society along with nature conservation. The long delay of civil war caused the management of protected areas to collapse and over the past decade effort was made to restore the protected area systems into practical sense. In 1993, the King Norodom Shihanouk (Father of the present king) issued the decree on a new national protected area system. Ministry of Environment is responsible for the management and development an area of 3,327,200 ha in cooperation with Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery. The Royal Decree 126 on "The Creation and Designation of Protection Area" designates 23 protected areas which constitute to 19 percent of the country. In addition, four management categories was defined, namely (1) national parks, (2) wildlife sanctuaries, (3) protected landscapes, and (4) multiple-use management areas. Until February 2008, law on protected areas was approved and it defined the clear roles, obligations and authority of different stakeholders. The increase of number of fish sanctuaries and protected forest areas set up through Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery bring the national protected area up to 21 percent of the nation.Even though protected area systems have been put in place, the implementations are still in process and face many challenges. In contrast, there are also some opportunities for protected areas in Cambodia. To have a deep understanding about the current situation of ecosystem conservation in Cambodia, this paper attempts to illustrate some main challenges and opportunities of management and conservation through protected area systems.

Beef Cattle Fattening and It's Marketing System. The Case of Damot Pulasa Woreda, Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia
Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 3.78, , course: Beef Cattle Production, language: English, abstract: Livestock production is an integral part of Ethiopia's agricultural sector and plays a vital role in the national economy. As the country has a large livestock population, which ranks first in Africa and tenth in the world, it has much to gain from the growing global markets for livestock products. Therefore, this study aims to give further inside how this can be achieved in the exemplary case of beef fattening. The study was conducted in the Southern Nation Nationality and People Regional Government in Wolaita Zone to assess beef cattle fattening and marketing system in the case of Damot Pulasa Woreda. In the present study stratified sampling method was used and a total of 120 households were selected for survey study. To collect the data both primary and secondary data source were used and the collected data were analyzed by using descriptive. The study indicated that the main purposes of beef cattle fattening were for 25, (78.1%) to start their fattening activity to replace the old oxen after the end of the plowing period and only small proportion 7, (21.9%) of the fatteners were income oriented respectively. The common beef cattle selection criteria were health condition, physical appearance, sex, age are 46.2%, 30.14%, 12.32%, 11.34% respectively. Major feed resources were natural pasture (56.25%), Maize and Enset tuber (31.25%), frushika (10%), grazing (2.5%). Beef cattle fattening constraints were feed shortage (34.4%), lack of capital (25%), market problem (15.6%), disease and parasite (9.375%), lack of extension service (9.375%), and drought (6.25%). The frequency of fattening per year was 21(65.6%) of cattle fatteners in the study area were fattening only one time per year and the rest 7(21.9%) and 4(12.5%) were fattening two times and three times per year respectively. Major beef cattle fattening opportunities were market demand 40.3%, feed resource and water availability 31.7% and comfortable environments 28%. Beef cattle marketing constraints were road problem 43%, unequal demand and surplus 29.2% and market distance 27.8%.Therefore based on the result we endorse that the farmers should be well awarded on beef cattle fattening and marketing system, use improved forage for supplementary feed and should be well-informed about market condition and further large scale research should be conducted on the area of beef marketing.
Trials in experimental orchards have shown that a suspension of 2.5 g/l hydrated lime Ca(OH)2 can be used as a selective, curative measure against apple scab (Venturia inaequalis). Treatment has to be done 20 hours after calculated infection, due to the fact that hydrated lime is only effective against spores and incipient mycelium. There is no preventive activity. Hydrated lime is able to substitute copper in certain areas of application. Integration into modern plant protection strategies could help to further minimize the use of copper. However, the protective properties of copper can not be replaced. Due to its novel mode of action, hydrated lime opens up new possibilities in fungicide resistance management. The use of modern application schedules methods could help to reduce the number of applications by up to 50%. However, reduced treatment frequencies may lead to increased scab incidence, especially in terms of storage scab. The amount of lime deployed in the described control strategy is equivalent to the annual leaching of lime, hence no adverse effects on soil reaction are anticipated.
