A Preliminary Study On Urinary Bladder Lesions Of Cattle Slaughtered At Hashim Export Abattoir, Debrzeit
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Veterinary medicine, , language: English, abstract: The study was conducted from December 2014 to April 2015 aimed to determine the prevalence and types of urinary bladder lesions of local and exotic breeds of male cattle slaughtered at one of the recognized Debre Zeit abattoir. The urinary bladders of 325 male cattle were removed, inspected and opened to detect gross lesions. The prevalence of urinary bladder lesions was found to be 6.5% (21/325). Chronic cystitis was the most frequent finding and account 66.7% (14/21) of the total urinary bladder lesions, while acute cystitis was verified in 33.3% (7/21) of the cases. Regarding to the breeds, the prevalence of 6.1% (18/297) and 10.7% (3/28) were found in local and exotic, respectively. Out of 21urinary bladder lesions, 14 cases were diagnosed as chronic cystitis while 7 cases were acute cystitis. The lesions of chronic cystitis were variable and categorized as uncomplicated, proliferative, hypertrophied, dilated, and emphysematous and that of acute cystitis were hemorrhagic and purulent. Regarding histological examination point of view from the total 21 cases inflammatory lesions were (14%) while carcinoma was present in (86%) patients The occurrence of urinary bladder lesion was not statistical association with breed, age categories and body condition (p>0.05,) of the animal. Finally, conclusive remarks and recommendations on future areas of research are forwarded.

Indagini Preliminari Relative alla Presenza di Emoparassiti negli Psittacidi
Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Veterinary medicine, grade: 110/110 cum laudae, Università degli Studi di Perugia (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biopathological Sciences and Hygiene of Animal and Food Productions, Section of Veterinary Pathology and Hygiene), course: Veterinary Medicine, language: Italian, abstract: Nella prima sezione di questa tesi sono riportate delle generalità relative alle principali problematiche di tipo sanitario e manageriale riscontrate nell'allevamento degli psittacidi.
Isolation and identification of the Newcastle disease virus
Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Veterinary medicine, Addis Ababa University, language: English, abstract: Newcastle disease (NCD) is a contagious bird disease affecting domestic and wild avian species characterised by respiratory signs (gasping, coughing), nervous signs depression, in appetence, muscular tremors, and drooping wings, twisting of head and neck, greenish watery diarrhoea, misshapen, rough-or thin shelled eggs and reduced egg production. This study was designed for isolation and identification of Newcastle disease virus from sick and suspected chicken in poultry farm, Bishoftu, Ethiopia, during October 16, 2015 - May 30, 2016 which brought to research and diagnostic laboratory in National Veterinary Institute (NVI), Ethiopia by owner. Total suspected chicken were 200 and out of these 30 chickens were brought to NVI and samples were collected. The sample included serum, cloacal and tracheal swab. Serum sample was collected for confirmatory diagnosis by serological HI test. HI result has showed that more than 80% of the total samples collected were positive for Newcastle disease virus (NCDV). Isolation of the virus from cloacal and tracheal swabs was performed by inoculating each suspected sample in to 10 day old embryonating eggs. Out of 30 NCDV suspected samples 24 (6layers and 18broilers) were positive for NCD virus isolation. Out of the 24 HA positive NCD virus suspected samples 24(6 layers and 18broilers were HI positive. Keywords: Diseases, Haemagglutination, Inhibition. Isolation, Newcastle, Virus
Major Snail Borne Trematode Infections in Cattle
Academic Paper in the subject Veterinary medicine, grade: 18.0, , language: English, abstract: Snail-borne parasitic sicknesses, for example, fascioliasis, paragonimiasis and schistosomiasis, present dangers to human wellbeing and create major financial issues in numerous tropical and sub-tropical nations. In this survey we sum up the center jobs of snails in the existence patterns of the parasites they have, their clinical indications and sickness disseminations, just as snail control strategies. Snails play four parts in the existence patterns of the parasites they have: as a middle of the road have contaminated by the principal stage hatchlings, as the main halfway host tainted by miracidia, as the primary moderate host that ingests the parasite eggs are ingested, and as the main transitional host entered by miracidia with or without the subsequent middle of the road have been an oceanic creature. Snail-borne parasitic infections target numerous organs, like the lungs, liver, biliary parcel, digestion tracts, mind and kidneys, prompting overactive resistant reactions, diseases, organ disappointment, barrenness and even demise. Non-industrial nations in Africa, Asia and Latin America have the most noteworthy occurrences of these infections, while a few endemic parasites have formed into overall pestilences through the worldwide spread of snails. Physical, synthetic and natural techniques have been acquainted with control the host snail populaces to forestall infection.
Retrospective Analysis of Suspected Rabies Cases in Lemu-Bilbilo District, Arsi Zone, Ethiopia
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Veterinary medicine, Addis Ababa University (College of veterinary medicine and agriculture), course: DVM THESIS, language: English, abstract: This study aimed to estimate the incidence of human dog bites, describe characteristics of bites and to identify risk factors for dog bites in Lemu-Bilbilo district. A retrospective analysis of suspected rabies cases (dog bites) in Lemu- Bilbilo district during the period 2013/2014 (n=1 year) was done. A total of 316 bite injuries inflicted by rabies-suspected animals were reported, giving a mean annual incidence of ~137 cases per 100,000. Males (56.6%) were more at risk than females (43.4%). The proportion of children (0-19 aged) bitten was relatively higher than that of adults. 34.2% of victims were bitten by neighbour dogs. Domestic dogs were involved in 95% of the human bite cases, whereas man (1.9%), donkey (1.6%), cattle (0.9%), wild animal (0.3%) and horse (0.3%) played a minor role. 94.3 % of the victims mentioned that the disease (rabies) status of the dogs involved in the bite incidents was rabid. Rabies-suspected case reports were most frequently occurred during August and October in each year. This study revealed that incidences of humans being bitten by dogs suspected of rabies are common in Lemu-Bilbilo, involve mostly children and predominantly occur during autumn. Rigorous surveillance to determine the status of rabies and the risk factors for human rabies, and increased educational awareness of people about the risk of dog bites and rabies at national level is necessary, particularly for children as well as formulation and institution of appropriate rabies-control policies, is required.
Salmonella Isolated from Fishermen and Fish Harvested from Lake Fincha, Ethiopia. Occurrence, Risk Factors and Antimicrobial Susceptibility
Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Veterinary medicine, , language: English, abstract: Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne and important zoonotic pathogens worldwide. Because of the difficulties in ensuring optimal hygienic food handling practices, the problem is even more severe in developing countries. A cross-sectional study with a simple random sampling approach was conducted to estimate the occurrence, identifying risk factors, and assessing the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Salmonella isolated from fishermen and fish species from Fincha Lake. Salmonella was isolated, phenotypically identified by Omni Log and the antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed using the disk diffusion method and interpreted following the Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute recommendations. Tilapia (220), common carp (85), and catfish (79) were the most known fish species in Lake Fincha. Samples were collected from skins (65),Gills ( 96 ), Intestines ( 110 ) , and Muscles (113 ) parts of these three species. Muscles 3 (2.65%) samples were found to be the most Salmonella positive, followed by gills 2 (2.08 %). No Salmonella was isolated from fishermen's hand swabs (0%).The prevalence of salmonella in fish was 1.30 % ( 95% confidence interval (CI ) : 0.42-3.01 ).The overall prevalence of Salmonella in the study area was 1.21% ( 95% CI: 0.39-2.80 ) . All of the isolated Salmonella (n=5) belongs to S. Typhimurium Serovars. The antimicrobial susceptibility test revealed that the isolates were resistant to Cefotaxime, Tetracycline, and Ampicillin disks. However, Chloramphenicol, Sulfamethaxazole+Trimethoprim, Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid, Gentamicin and Cefoxitin were found effective in inhibiting the growth of all of the isolates. Isolation of Salmonella from fish was associated with contamination of the harvesting areas, contamination of the Lake, collecting and processing materials and equipment. Factors independently predicted Salmonella occurrence were the presence of contamination (AOR: 2.84, 95%CI: 1.45-1.83, P=0.041), fish that was not iced after landing (AOR: 8 95% CI: 0.06-5.91, P=0.032) and poor handling practice (AOR: 29.3, 95% CI: 0.06-0.37 P=0.0.035).In conclusion, Salmonella has been isolated from fish collected from Lake Fincha, so appropriate measures should be taken to prevent contamination and infection.

The Production Performance of the Ethiopian Indigenous Chickens
Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Veterinary medicine, , language: English, abstract: Indigenous village chicken is the most prominent class of livestock in the country and constitutes about 60-80% of the total poultry population, their productivity is low because of poor nutrition and low genetic potential. The number of flock per household in most Ethiopian communities is small constituting on average of 7-10 mature chickens 20-24 adult hens, a male birds and a number of growers of varies ages. Such production system may result in slow growth and poor layers of small sized eggs. About 40-60% of the chicks hatched die during the first 8 weeks of age mainly due to disease and predators attack. About half of the eggs produced have to be hatched to replace chicken that have died and the brooding time of the laying hens is longer, with many brooding cycles required to compensate for its unsuccessful brooding. Pullets and cockerels reached sexual maturity at an average age of 6.4 months and 5.7 months, respectively. Even though the productivity of local chicken is very poor, they are very important to withstand certain harsh environmental conditions, and can perform better under poor management than cross and exotic breeds, they are also well known to possess desirable characters such as ideal mother, good sister, hatch their own eggs, excellent foragers, resistance to common poultry disease and special meat and egg quality.
