Caries Vaccine And The Ways To Modfiy Streptococcus Mutans
Document from the year 2019 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, , language: English, abstract: The development of vaccines for tooth decay has been under investigation for more than 30 years. Caries vaccines are said to be in animal testing since 1972, but difficulty in developing it and lack of economic interests are the reasons why these vaccines are not available commercially as of 2018. Streptococcus mutans has been identified as the agent to cause dental caries. This book attempts to search for ways that can intercept or modify this agent immunologically. Resolving this, there are various aspects to be thought upon, like the pathways through which the Streptococcus mutans enters and accumulates in dental biofilm. Bacterial components which cause virulence response and how the immune pathways matured in a young child with caries are questions answered in this book. A thorough research is registered regarding modern vaccine design and its delivery, passive administration of antibodies against Streptococcus mutans virulence antigens, and degree of protection in preclinical studies and investigation. This book explains the caries protective activity of immunization with dental caries vaccine and the proof awaits the clinical trials.

Cone Beam Computed Tomography and its applications in Dentistry
Document from the year 2022 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, grade: 1, , course: Masters of Dental Surgery in Oral Medicine and Radiology, language: English, abstract: Cone-beam CT is almost certainly going to revolutionize dental radiology and impact on almost all aspects of dental practice. CBCT is an emerging technical advancement in CT imaging that uses cone beam acquisition geometry to provide relatively low-dose imaging with high isotropic spatial resolution acquired with a single gantry revolution. Efficient use of the x-ray beam in CBCT imaging produces a relatively low x-ray tube power requirement, which, along with flat panel detection and limited anatomic coverage, has facilitated the production of compact CBCT scanners suitable for use in an office-based setting. The development and rapid commercialization of CBCT technology dedicated for use in the maxillofacial region will undoubtedly increase both general and specialist practitioner access to this imaging modality. CBCT is capable of providing accurate, sub-millimetre resolution images in formats enabling 3D visualization of the complexity of the maxillofacial region. Increasing availability of this technology provides the practitioner with a modality that is extending maxillofacial imaging from diagnosis to image guidance of operative and surgical procedures.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, Bharati Vidyapeeth University Dental College and Hospital (bharati vidyapeeth deemed university), course: post graduate periodontology, language: English, abstract: The frenum is a mucous membrane fold that attaches the lip and the cheek to the alveolar mucosa, the gingiva, and the underlying periosteum. An aberrant frenum gives rise to aesthetic and functional problems and needs to be eliminated. The frena may jeopardize the gingival health when they are attached too closely to the gingival margin, either due to an interference in the plaque or due to a muscle pull. In addition to this, the maxillary frenum may present aesthetic problems or compromise the orthodontic result in the midline diastema cases, thus causing a recurrence after the treatment. The management of such an aberrant frenum is accomplished by performing a frenectomy. This is a compilation of a brief overview about the frenum, with a focus on the indications, contraindications, advantages and the disadvantages of various frenectomy techniques, like Miller's technique, V-Y plasty, Z-plasty , frenectomy by using electrocautery. and laser.KEYWORDS: FRENUM ,FRENECTOMY,MUCOGINGIVAL TECHNIQUES

Patient Protection in Dentistry. Safe Use of Radiation Sources
Academic Paper from the year 2013 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, grade: 4.0, University of Ghana, Legon (School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences), language: English, abstract: Current literature on dental radiology was reviewed in order to seek justification for radiological protection of patients in dental radiography, to explore the different factors affecting patient dose and to derive practical guidance on how to achieve radiological protection of patients in dentistry. Individual doses incurred in dental radiology are in general relatively low, however it is generally accepted that there is no safe level of radiation dose and that no matter how low the doses received are, there is a mathematical probability of an effect. Hence appropriate patient protection measures must be instituted to keep the exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).The literature review demonstrated that there is considerable scope for significant dose reductions in dental radiology using the techniques of optimisation of protection. The techniques of optimization of protection that can be used to ensure patient dose is as low as reasonably achievable whilst achieving clinically adequate image quality include the following: image receptor election, image receptor holders, collimation, beam filtration, operating potential and exposure time, patient protective equipment, film exposure and processing, film storage, image viewing, quality assurance, diagnostic reference levels, technique charts and training and education
Prosthetic Teeth Arrangement and Dental Arch Dimensions for Edentulous Patients in Saudi-Arabia
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, , language: English, abstract: The study delves into the intricate world of dental arch forms and dimensions within the Saudi population, shedding light on the diverse characteristics that shape the oral landscape of both men and women. The research employs a descriptive cross-sectional survey, utilizing alginate impressions and a standardized methodology to capture the nuances of maxillary and mandibular arches in 100 dentate subjects. With a keen focus on arch forms and dimensions, the paper aims to unravel the predominant patterns within the Saudi population. The findings reveal intriguing details, such as the prevalence of square arches in males and a mix of ovoid and square arches in females for the maxillary dental arch. On the mandibular front, square arches take the lead in both genders. The gender lens further highlights significant differences in arch dimensions, with males exhibiting increased measurements compared to females. However, exceptions exist in maxillary anterior and molar arch lengths. Statistical analyses, including Chi-Square test, Student 't' test, and Pearson's correlation test, contribute rigor to the exploration. As the narrative unfolds, the paper not only provides a panoramic view of arch forms but also underscores their clinical implications. The absence of significant gender differences in arch forms prompts considerations for prosthetic rehabilitation among Saudi edentulous patients. The determined arch dimensions emerge as valuable tools in the selection of accurate stock impression trays and the precise arrangement of artificial teeth.
Root Canal Configuration
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2022 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, grade: 8, , course: Post graduation, language: English, abstract: Pulp space is complex, root canals may divide and rejoin. In the simplest form each root with one canal and single apical foramen is not observed always, other canal configurations are present which exit the root with two, three or more foramen. Several classifications have been proposed to describe root canal configurations for communication. With the advent of three dimensional imaging technique researchers are reporting newer configurations. Hence, newer classifications are proposed by each researcher. It is difficult to retain all classifications.Secondly, these newer classification are not the continuation of previous ones. Also, similar terminology has been used by different researchers for different configurations. Hence, in this paper instead of grouping root canal configurations into types, nomenclature system is proposed to identify eachconfiguration individually.
Root-End Resection, Retro-Preparation and Retrograde Root-End Filling Materials
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, grade: A, , course: MDS, language: English, abstract: This book analyses different types of retrograde filling materials. The major goals of root canal treatment are to clean and shape the root canal system and seal it in 3 dimensions to prevent reinfection of the tooth. Although initial root canal therapy has high degree of success, failures can still occur after treatment.Recent studies reported failure rates of 14%-16% for initial root canal treatment. Lack of healing is attributed to persistent intraradicular infection residing in previously uninstrumented canals, dentinal tubules, or in the complex irregularities of the root canal system. The extraradicular causes of endodontic failures include periapical actinomycosis, a foreign body reaction caused by extruded endodontic materials, an accumulation of endogenous cholesterol crystals in the apical tissues, and an unresolved cystic lesion. This book is composed of ten chapters and begins with the need of root-end resection. The succeeding chapters deal with the method and concept of root-end resection, root end preparation to receive the material, ideal requirements of materials to be placed in the resected and prepared root-end. The concluding chapters describe various root-end materials available in the market so far and their properties, focusing on each individual material one by one, their advantages and disadvantages. This book will prove useful to Endodontists and Researchers in the field of endodontic surgeries & root-end filling materials. Also it would provide the undergraduate and postgraduate students an easy way of reference for covering a broad spectrum of Root-end filling Materials available today, in lucid and simple language.
Stem Cells and its use in Dentistry
Professorial Dissertation from the year 2018 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, grade: -, Teerthanker Mahaveer University (Teerthanker Mahaveer Dental College & Research Centre), course: Dentistry, language: English, abstract: One of the fundamental properties of stem cell is that it does not have any tissue-specific structure that allows it to perform a specialized function. Unspecialized stem cells can give rise to specialized cells including heart muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells. This process is called differentiation.Several types of stem cell have been discovered from germ cells, the embryo, fetus, and adult. Each of these has promised to revolutionize the future of regenerative medicine through the provision of cell-replacement therapies to treat a variety of debilitating diseases. Stem cell research opens-up the new field of 'cell-based therapies' and, as such, several safety measures have also to be evaluated. Regenerative medicine is based on stem cells. The dental pulp contains the progenitor/stem cells which have the self-renewal capability, multi-lineage differentiation capacity and clonogenic efficiency. Dental stem cells can generate many types of tissues including bone, nerve, cartilage, teeth, and fat. However, the biology of these mysterious cells have yet to be understood and a lot more basic research is needed before new therapies using stem-cell-differentiated derivatives can be applied. Recently stem cells banks are present, and even some of these banks do not only freeze cord stem cells but also dental stem cells of baby teeth. Hence this review attempts to study the history, current concepts, evolution of stem cells in dentistry, dental stem cell banking in India, characterization of the stem cells in dentin regeneration and stem cell therapy in dentistry.
